Sunrise Magic in Avondale: Our Duck-tastic Setup

There are some sessions that just stick with you—this was definitely one of them.

Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing a mother-daughter duo and their five newest, fluffiest family members: DUCKLINGS. Yep, you read that right. Not dogs, not kittens—baby ducks. And let me tell you, it was every bit as adorable and chaotic as it sounds.

We met up at sunrise here in Avondale, AZ to ensure the light was perfect, and the setup was simple but magical. A metal tub for swimming time, a clear umbrella to catch that soft light and even a duck or two, and even a Kate backdrop featuring none other than rubber ducky’s. Because if we’re gonna do ducks, we’re gonna do ducks.

Cuddles, Chaos, and Duckling Swims in the West Valley

Mom and daughter cozied up on a bench, smiling as the ducklings swam around like they owned the place. Then we hit the ground—literally. They laid down to get eye-level with their fluffy crew, laughing as the ducklings waddled off in perfect, uncoordinated chaos.

At one point, we had the ducklings safely tucked away and then released them to started following the mom and daughter around like tiny, feathery puppies. One even stood out with a lighter bill than the rest—a little ducky diva in the making.

It was precious, hilarious, and heart-melting all at once.

From Farm Babies to Feathered Friends: My Passion for Animal Photoshoots

As someone who’s photographed a fair share of farm babies at the farmers market with MM Ranch Services Mobile Petting Zoo, I’m no stranger to the animal antics. I live for these kinds of shoots. Liana Steals the Show

While our adorable animal guests from MM Ranch Services Mobile Petting Zoo (Lucy the floppy-eared bunny, Lily the mysterious black bunny, and the fluffy chicks, Wilma and Betty!) certainly added a layer of irresistible cuteness, Liana truly shone. Dressed in the dreamiest blue dress, complete with a sweet floral bun and the most perfect white bow sandals, she looked like she’d stepped straight out of a storybook. Photographing her was an absolute joy – every pose, every smile was pure magic.

The whimsical Kate Backdrop, with its giant carrots and massive cabbages, created a true veggie wonderland that sparked so much joy. Our Spring Minis this year were all about bringing a touch of Wonderland to Avondale, and while our furry and feathered friends from MM Ranch Services Mobile Petting Zoo (including the adorable Lucy, Lily, Wilma, and Betty!) were a huge hit, this oldest sister created a magic all her own. The laughter as she fed Lucy a carrot was truly heartwarming. A big thank you to MM Ranch Services for bringing such adorable companions to our set!

Sweet Sisters

The contrast between the sweet 3-month-old with her delicate, porcelain doll features and her adorable 2-year-old sister with those incredible curls (oh, how this straight-haired girl envies those beautiful spirals!) was just breathtaking. A Familiar West Valley Phoenix Face, A Milestone Moment

Hello all! I just had to share some highlights from a recent senior session that was truly special. I’ve had the pleasure of photographing him before, back when he was much smaller at a few family sessions. He was such a cutie pie as a kid and now seeing him now, all grown up and ready to graduate, really tugged at my heartstrings.

Edgar's Journey: Dreams, Wrestling, and Teenage Life

Edgar holds a special place in my heart, and it was an honor to capture this milestone in his life. He’s got big dreams – college or the Air Force, and I know he’ll excel at whatever he sets his mind to. He also told me about his favorite memory of high school was his wrestling days. Like any typical teenager, he enjoys the essentials: eating, sleeping, and spending time with his girlfriend (who, I hear, is pretty amazing!).

Now, let’s talk about the shoot. Even though Edgar looks like a natural in front of the camera, he was a little hesitant at first. That’s why I always encourage my grads to bring along a parent, sibling, or friend. It really helps them relax and be themselves. Downtown Phoenix to Papago Park: Two Locations, One Stellar Shoot

We started downtown, capturing that urban vibe, and then transitioned to the stunning backdrop of Papago Park. Edgar absolutely rocked both locations! I’m always amazed at how these seniors pull it together, especially after two hours of shooting. Most teenagers would be ready for a nap, but Edgar kept his A-game going strong until the very end.

Golden Moments and Sticky Fingers: My First Cake Smash!

Avondale AZ Cake Smash: Celebrating Nile's Golden Birthday

Okay, friends, let’s get real for a minute. This year is shaping up to be a year of firsts for me, and I’m loving every minute of it! As an Avondale, AZ based mom-tographer and, let’s be honest, a mom who’s starting to feel the pangs of those “little kid” years slipping away (hello, two teenagers!), I’m soaking up every bit of baby sweetness I can get. And let me tell you, my first-ever cake smash with sweet little Nile on March 1st? Pure magic. Isn’t she just the cutest?! Seriously, my heart melted the moment she walked in and saw how much she had grown since her newborn photoshoot last year. But here’s the kicker: Her mom, Brandi, told me that it was Nile’s “golden” birthday. A golden birthday is when your age matches your birthdate. So, Nile, being born on the 1st, turned one on the 1st. How adorable is that?!

Of course, we HAD to tie that into the cake smash theme. We went all in with gold, rose gold, and white balloons and it turned out absolutely perfect. And let’s give a huge shoutout to Reyna’s Sweet Shop in Buckeye, AZ for that gorgeous cake! There is so much to be said for simplicity when you have so much going on in a photo and Reyna did a perfect job of creating a more sophisticated, elegant small cake with touches of gold on it. It was the perfect centerpiece. We also had the golden “N” for Nile, which gave it that extra special touch.

Adorable Outfits & Hesitant First Bites: Capturing Real Moments

Brandi, Nile’s mom, has amazing style. She dressed Nile in the most adorable outfits. That pink velvet jumper with the knee-high socks and bows? I mean, come on! And that delicate lace and feather onesie for the cake smash? Absolutely breathtaking. I don’t think it could have been any more perfect. Honestly, watching a tired little Nile hesitantly touch the cake unsure of what it was or what she was supposed to do with… it brought back so many memories of my own kids at that age. Those messy, sweet, fleeting moments that you just want to bottle up and keep forever even when they don’t necessarily turn out the way you envisioned them in your head. It’s all a part of your family’s beautiful story.

And here’s a little behind-the-scenes secret: Nile arrived a bit tired, having missed her nap. But even with those sleepy eyes, she was an absolute angel! She smiled those big, beautiful smiles for her parents, and it was so clear how much love they share. The way Brandi and Kingston looked at Nile, with those beaming, proud smiles – that’s what makes these sessions truly special. It’s not just about the photos; it’s about capturing the genuine joy and connection within a family. Seeing that love exuded from their smiles was a gift.

Whew, it’s getting hot in there! So hot, in fact, that I’ve decided to take a photo booth hiatus at the Waddell Get Local Farmers Market until the cooler days of fall. Even with all the delicious smells and friendly faces, it’s just too much to ask folks to look their picture-perfect best while roasting in the booth. But don’t worry, I’ll be back! This past season at the market has been a blast, and I have so many sweet memories to hold onto until then.

Vision Studio Open House: A Photographer’s Dream Come True!

I recently had the pleasure of attending Vision Studio’s open house, and I was absolutely blown away! As a photographer, I’m always on the lookout for inspiring locations and unique backdrops, and Vision Studio certainly delivered.

The Twilight Room

My daughter and I had the opportunity to explore two of their stunning rooms at one of their open houses. The first, the “Twilight Room,” was a photographer’s dream come true. Dark blue walls created a moody backdrop, while natural light streamed through filtered windows, casting beautiful shadows. The room itself was incredibly versatile, featuring a couch, a bed, and a chair, all against different backdrops. The possibilities for creative portraits were endless!

The Four Seasons Room

The second room, the “Four Seasons Room,” was equally impressive. Featuring white and pink flowers, natural light, and a dramatic pink bow on one wall, this room exuded a light and airy feel. It would be perfect for Valentine’s Day photos, Mother’s Day portraits, or any spring-themed shoot.

I was truly amazed by the variety and versatility of both rooms. Vision Studio is a fantastic resource for photographers, and I can’t wait to return for future shoots.

A Day of Love and Laughter at the Waddell Farmers Market

What a whirlwind of cuteness! Our Valentine’s Day Mini Sessions at the Get Local Waddell Farmers Market on February 9th were an absolute hit. We had the privilege of capturing some truly heartwarming moments with friends, families, and even a group of beautiful sisters!

The smiles were contagious as little ones cuddled with Lucy the bunny from MM Ranch Services Mobile Petting Zoo. Lucy continued to steal hearts, and Rudy the calf with his charming buck teeth was a fan favorite. We witnessed pure joy as children explored the petting zoo next to the photo booth and then came over to have their photos taken with the sweet barn yard babies, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Senior Snaps: Tommy’s Low-Key College Photo Shoot

This blog is way past due since Tommy, graduated last May. He wanted simple photos. He had no specific location in mind, just a desire to capture this milestone in his life. After a quick chat about his style and preferences, we decided on a location in Buckeye, Arizona, that offered a stunning mountain backdrop, rustic fence and some great trees.

Tommy arrived prepared with his cap and gown, a casual outfit, and a more formal look. We kept the shoot relaxed and focused on capturing his personality. We explored the area, finding 2 different spots that highlighted the area creating a mix of casual and more formal shots.

The entire session was a breeze, lasting less than an hour. Tommy was easygoing and a natural in front of the camera. The result? A diverse range of photos that perfectly captured his personality and celebrated this exciting chapter in his life.

Pro Tip: If you’re a senior heading into your photo shoot, don’t overthink it! Choose a location that feels authentic to you and bring a few outfits that reflect your personal style. Most importantly, relax and enjoy the experience!

A Salazar Family Christmas Photoshoot

The Salazar family has always held a special place in my heart. I’ve not only had the privilege of capturing their growth over the years, but I’ve also had both girls in my Girl Scout troop for a decade now.

What I love about Sonya is she is always game when I ask if we can try a new location out. This park was simply breathtaking. A stunning mountain in the background, while lush green grass and tree-lined walkways created a picturesque setting. The Salazars, dressed in shades of green and black, which blended seamlessly with the natural beauty of the park.

Sonya and Jose, the heart of the family, were game for anything, even a spontaneous dance session in the middle of the park, as cars drove past. Their deep love for each other was obvious, and it was a joy to capture those tender moments.

Sabrina and Selena, the older sisters, have the most beautiful flowing, raven-black hair. Sabrina, is more of the quiet one, with a gentle soul. Selena, on the other hand, is a social butterfly, always ready with a joke or a smile. Yet, they shared a sisterly love that is strong and sweet.

Their boys, JR and Joey, were bundles of energy. Joey, the younger one, was always on the move, exploring every nook and cranny of the park. JR, on the other hand, was a master of facial expressions, from adorable frowns to heartwarming smiles.

As a photographer, it’s moments like these that make my job truly rewarding. The Salazar family’s warmth, love, and genuine connection make them a dream to work with. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this amazing family and to continue capturing their precious moments.

A Family’s Love Story: The Diaz Family

I knew I wanted to take the Diaz family’s photos the first time their beautiful daughter, Liana, sat in front of my lens at the Get Local Farmers Market in Waddell, AZ. Her brown, curious eyes and sweet smile captivated me instantly.

The Diaz family is simply heartwarming. Natalie’s gorgeous brown eyes with flecks of gold and Frank’s infectious smile lit up every frame. And little Liana, with her adorable buns and playful spirit, was the star of the show for sure.

Natalie chose a stunning desert as the family photo backdrop. Phoenix, AZ has a naturally beauty backdrop when it comes to desert photos, with towering cacti and breathtaking mountains.

The moment Liana stepped out of the car, she was full of energy and excitement. She wanted to make sure we took one funny face photo, which of course we took more than just one. Capturing her infectious joy was pure bliss for me. Watching her interact with her parents was even more heartwarming. Their love for each other was obvious, and it was a privilege to witness and document their bond.

As I went through the photos, I couldn’t help but feel a wave of emotion. This family was truly special, and I was so grateful to have been a small part of their story.

If I could shoot families like the Diaz family every day, I would do it in a heartbeat. Their love, their laughter, and their unique personalities would make every photoshoot a memorable experience.

A Sweet Holiday Photoshoots at the Get Local Waddell Farmers Market

The holiday season was in full swing at the Get Local Farmers Market, and it’s been a joy capturing these precious moments. I partnered with MM Ranch Services Mobile Petting Zoo people could choose an animal from the petting to be a part of their photoshoot. The adorable hot cocoa backdrop was perfect for these mini sessions complete with a bale of hay.

One of my favorite moments was capturing a little girl in a Santa dress with Lucy the bunny. Her eyes sparkled with delight as she cuddled sweet Lucy. It was a heartwarming sight that perfectly encapsulated the holiday spirit.

But it’s not just about the big animals. We’ve had some heartwarming moments with the smaller creatures too. One little boy’s face lit up as he held a tiny baby chick in his hands. It was a pure expression of joy that I was lucky enough to capture.

Maloy Extended Family Photoshoot

At a recent extended family photoshoot on a chilly November in Peoria, AZ. I captured the essence of what I love most about family photography. The Maloy family, dressed in timeless blues and grays, gathered for a generational portrait, from the newest member, Nash, to Great-Grandpa Dale.

This particular shoot stands out, not just for the beautiful family and the adorable little ones, but also because I was tricked by a family member, adding an unexpected layer of fun to the session.

But let’s be honest, the real stars of the show are the Maloy family themselves. Just look at them!

While capturing couple portraits during the photoshoot, I gave the usual prompt: ‘Look at me, look at each other, kiss.’ Most couples responded naturally, but one pair’s reaction was unexpected. As I gave the cue, they burst out laughing. I assumed they might be uncomfortable with public displays of affection.

After the shoot, the woman approached me with a serious tone. “We’re siblings,” she stated, and began to walk away. My heart sank as I mental went through the photos, realizing the awkward poses I’d captured knowing they were siblings. With many family members already having left due to the cold, reshooting wasn’t an option.

Just as I was processing the situation, she turned back, laughed, and confessed, “Just kidding, we’re married.” Relief washed over me as I too now started laughing.

This generational photo reminds me of one in my own house of my husband and his father and grandfather with our son so it’s pretty special to get to capture this moment. Can we just all agree that Dale is the best? He is surrounded by all his grandchildren and great grandchild and just look at his smile!

October 20, 2024 was a special day at the Get Local Farmers Market in Waddell, AZ. It was a day dedicated to the littlest ones – a day all about babies and kids!

I was there doing photoshoots filled with autumn charm, thanks to a stunning backdrop of large white barn doors adorned with vibrant fall leaves. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the adorable baby farm animals from MM Services Mobile Petting Zoo. Families, babies, and toddlers were able to cuddle with bunnies, goats, and other furry friends. The interactions were filled with laughter, joy, and pure innocence.

The weather was picture-perfect, creating a magical atmosphere for the photoshoot. The soft, natural light and the beautiful fall scenery made for some truly stunning photographs. It was captivating to see the genuine connections between the people and the animals, and I’m so grateful to have been able to capture these precious moments.

Styling Your Family Photoshoot: A Guide

As a professional photographer in Avondale, AZ, I’ve seen families struggle with choosing the perfect outfits for their photo sessions. The key to a cohesive and flattering look lies in simplicity and coordination. Here’s a simple trick I recommend: start with a “centerpiece” outfit.

Choosing Your Centerpiece

The “centerpiece” outfit should be comfortable and versatile, serving as the foundation for the rest of your family’s attire. (The “centerpiece” outfit is usually mom’s outfit. I mean really we should be the “centerpiece” anyway right?) Flowing dresses often work well for moms, adding a touch of elegance and movement. This outfit can incorporate multiple colors (about 3-4 is ideal) to provide a color palette for the rest of the family. OR be a solid color, use Pinterest to find complementary color palettes for the rest of the family if you choose a solid color. Aim for three or more colors or shades of the chosen color for a harmonious look with a base color like cream, navy blue, white, black or beige.

Coordinating the Rest of the Family

Once you’ve selected your “centerpiece” outfit, it’s time to dress the rest of the family. For the most challenging person to coordinate, choose a solid color that complements the centerpiece’s colors. For example, if the centerpiece has white for a base and then pinks, blues and yellows, you could choose a blue button-down shirt, khaki’s and black shoes for a dad.

Next, dress the children in solid colors that match the centerpiece. For instance, you could put one child in a white dress and the other in pink dress. The possibilities are endless!

Keep it simple. Avoid complex patterns or graphics that can distract from the main focus: your family.
Prioritize comfort. Ensure everyone is comfortable in their outfits.
Consider the location. Choose clothing that complements the backdrop.

As a family photographer in the Phoenix, Arizona area, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing some truly beautiful moments for families. I understand that the day of a family photo session can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when you have young children. I used to be there with 2 kiddos myself. That’s why I’ve put together these tips to help you out.

Before Your Family Photo Session

Coordinate outfits: Choosing outfits can be a hurdle but honestly just find things that complement each other and reflect your family’s style. Maybe you are a jeans and t-shirt kinda family or your family dresses up every Sunday for church. If you want more detailed information on the why, where and how of picking outfits for a photoshoot check out the blog below.
Prepare your children: Talk to your children about the photoshoot. Let them know it’s going to be fun and exciting! Feel free to show them a photo of the photographer so they know who they will be seeing.
Pack essentials: Don’t forget to bring snacks (nothing blue or sticky please) and water.

Relax and have fun: The most important thing is to enjoy the experience and let your personalities shine through. Seriously #1!
Be patient: Children can be unpredictable, so be patient and go with the flow. It took me a long time to learn this.
Encourage interaction: Play games, tell jokes, or ask your children questions to get them engaged and smiling.
Capture candid moments: Let your children be themselves and capture those natural, spontaneous moments. Those are the best!

After the Family Photo Shoot:

Do something fun as a family: Go out for ice cream to continue the fun or go home, blow some bubbles and play a family game. Truly embrace the experience and let the giggles and laughter continue.
Snap a family selfie: Snap a selfie of your family all dressed up and post it letting people know you just had family photos done.

A Family of Three in Phoenix, AZ

In addition to the fishing-themed details, we tried to get a few shots in a dino outfit but he was not having it! LOL! That’s okay we moved onto family photos. Kory’s gentle interactions with Nash, Bailey’s warm embraces, and the way they looked at their newborn with awe and adoration were beautifully captured. These images tell a story of a family coming together, full of hope and dreams for the future.

Capturing Kindergarten Excitement: JR’s Superhero Journey

Hey there!

Today, I’m so excited to share a heartwarming photoshoot with you all. As a mom who adores every moment with her kids (seriously, where does the time go?), I recently had the joy of capturing my little superhero buddy, JR, as he gears up for kindergarten this fall. I’ve known JR since he was born and I adore this little guy. He is so much fun to be around and has the most endearing brown eyes.

JR, was all smiles and mischief, rocking his superhero shirt and backpack. His sweet eyes are filled with a mix of excitement and a hint of nervousness, ready to take on the world like his favorite heroes. But what really stole the show during our session was JR’s newfound friend—a giant Mickey Mouse plushie! Yep, you read that right. In some of the photos, JR was chatting away with Mickey, treating him like the buddy he’s eagerly waiting to meet at school.

It’s moments like these that remind me why I love being a photographer—capturing these fleeting, magical moments that are as precious as they are unique. JR’s imagination and enthusiasm for life shine through in every click of the camera. And let me tell you, hearing him talk about starting school? Absolute gold.

As we snapped away, I couldn’t help but reflect on how quickly time flies. From toddler tantrums to superhero aspirations, every stage is a new adventure. Embracing the Unexpected: Newborn Photography

As a professional photographer, I’ve often found myself in various niches, capturing moments with beautiful senior graduate girls to amazing families, even pet photography. Yet, there were always a few areas I always told myself I would steer clear of—newborn photography was one of those. “Never say never”… I’ve come to realize just how true that is. Today, I’m excited to share with you the story of how I found unexpected joy in photographing two sweet newborn baby girls.

The Reluctance

Newborn photography always seemed daunting to me. The idea of working with such delicate, tiny humans felt overwhelming. There are so many factors to consider—lighting, temperature, timing, and above all, the baby’s comfort and safety. It’s an art form that demands patience, precision, and a gentle touch. I admired those who specialized in it but didn’t see myself venturing into that world.

The Turning Point

Then came a request from a dear friend. Her niece had just welcomed a sweet baby girl into the world and asked if I would photograph her. Despite my initial hesitation, I agreed, telling myself it would be a one-time experience. But then came another request from a different friend who wanted to gift someone a photo session with her newborn baby girl.

The Experience

Walking into both photoshoots I was so nervous but then when I looked at these beautiful miracles I was suddenly overtaken with pure joy. As I set up my equipment, I felt a mix of anxiety and excitement. Would I be able to capture the essence of these sweet precious baby girls?

As each session began, something magical happened. I found myself immersed in the experience. The challenge of capturing their innocence was invigorating. I experimented with different angles, soft lighting, and gentle props. Each click of the shutter was more rewarding than the last.

The Outcome

When I reviewed the photos later, I was amazed at what I had captured. The images were tender, pure, and full of love. The soft focus on tiny fingers and toes, the serene expressions on Amore’s face, and the huge smile on Nile’s —it was all there. The photos told a story of new beginnings.

The Revelation

These experiences taught me a valuable lesson about stepping out of my comfort zone. I had always believed that newborn photography wasn’t for me, but these sessions gave me confidence. It’s not just about taking pictures; it’s about capturing fleeting moments that families will treasure forever.

Conclusion

“Never say never” has become a mantra I hold close to my heart. It’s a reminder that the unexpected can lead to beautiful, fulfilling experiences. If I had stuck to my original resolve, I would have missed out on the profound joy that comes with photographing these sweet newborns. So, here’s to embracing the unknown and finding joy in the places we least expect.

A heart for art runs in the family

The Kim VanOs Photography Logo Evolution

It seems kinda funny to say the evolution of my logo. It actually seems weird to have a logo. I never actually thought I would need one. I want to share how I came up with my logo. I’m a proud mom who loves her kids A LOT. They are both artistically inclined. In the summers we would create all kinds of art and hold a viewing party before school would start with family and friends. But that is another blog all together. My daughter is an artist in many ways and with different mediums, so I knew I wanted her to help create it. When I first starting really thinking about a logo it was such an overwhelming task that I needed to simplify it. I started by asking myself a few questions.

Why was I starting this business? – I wanted to send my kids on trips with school and church. I mean I could’ve just kept doing it as a hobby. The love for photos was there.
Why do I love photos? Well, I’ve always loved photos, they are a peak into the past and a reminder of what used to, but I really started to take photos when my daughter was born.
What started my obsessive love of photos? Seeing my sweet baby girl in them.
Where did I live? Everyone kept saying that I need to make sure people knew my location as a photographer. My first thought was…well, in the desert. And after leaving AZ for a decade to live in MI, I began to appreciate the desert. By that I mean truly love the way it smells after a good rain, the variety of cacti, the mountains and the sunsets. Oh, how I love the sunsets here!!!
What are some of my favorite photoshoots? Desert shoots. Definitely sunset shoots in the desert.
What are my favorite colors? Green if I had to choose just one but as a color combo it is the colors of the Arizona sunsets. Uh, they are stunning!

Once I really reflected on some of the reason’s I wanted to be a photographer and some of the things I love, it was pretty easy. I gave my 15-year-old daughter just a few things…. Desert sunset background that says Kim VanOs Photography.

I loved the first version, but I really wanted something a bit more muted but that people who live here in the desert would get. I also wanted the name to typed instead of handwritten on her phone. Here is the updated version….

It is my hope when people see this logo, they associate it with a mom who loves her children, the desert, art, and that creativity is embraced and celebrated in my family. And that I want to share that love of art through photography with your family through my camera lens.

I am an animal lover through and through. There aren’t many sweet animal babies that I don’t love. Baby farm animals are no exception with their adorable personalities, sweet little faces and exuberant personalities. The little guys at MM Services Petting Zoo are adorable and I mean really, really adorable! I am working with MM Services Petting Zoo to offer a spring mini with their sweet farm animals this April. Dodge the goat poses like a pro

Dodge the goat was just recently injured and has been on workmen’s comp but will be coming back to work soon. Dodge wants everyone to know….

even goats get hurt so please be gentle with us we are living breathing creatures who can and are unpredictable but that’s what make each of use unique and special.
That means that his little chicken friends will flap their wings, Porky will snort, and his goat buddies may jump so staying calm will help them feel comfortable around you. Please no screaming, yelling or sudden movements.

Chickens and their chicks will be at the photoshoot too

These little cuties will be a bit bigger when we get to our photoshoot and they want you to remember that they are still just babies learning to fly and the world around them so please….

do not pick us up because if we fall from your hands if you get scared when we jump and we can be seriously injured or die.
do not squeeze us we are not lemons and squeezing us can harm us.
lastly, we are live animals and that means we go potty! We don’t use discretion in this so please keep that in mind.

Reminders when taking photos with live animals

Each animal’s personality is unique, and it doesn’t matter if it is a pig or dog, a goat or a cat they deserve to be treated with respect and shown patience when working with them. The most beautiful photos are with animals that are relaxed and happy so while you may get to hold bunny or a scratch a goat behind the ear, you may also get to feed some of them, but most photos will just have the animals in the photos next or in front of you.

Something that people don’t always remember is allergies. I know it is exciting to have photos taken with these cuties but if you have allergies you may need to take some allergy meds prior to coming so you don’t have red blood-shot eyes will the photos.

Each family will be required to sign a contract with Kim VanOs Photography and a waiver from MM Services Mobile Farm.

The Base Of The White Tank Mountains

No matter what type of photo session you are booking this location has beautiful green grass and trees. There is a small incline to get to it or a longer walk but once you are there you won’t even realize you are in the desert…unless you turn around see the cacti behind you.

This cute area nestled in the heart of Goodyear, AZ not only offers the gorgeous trees and green grass but a view of the mountains in the distance that are all pulled together with walking paths that are easy to navigate for small children, moms with heels or grandparents.

When this beautiful grad requested a specific “nature” photoshoot near Lake Pleasant we did a quick scouting trip and found out it wasn’t going to work. That is when we found Riparian Preserve and it was perfect for what she was looking for and even offered a little bit more. From tall grass, trees with canopy’s, small streams, and wide-open areas.

This blog is a three-part serious and so if you haven’t read the previous 2 blogs, I highly recommend you start there since it will explain the overall concept of the exposure triangle when shooting in manual mode and aperture.

So, you got a DSLR...now what?

If you have read the previous blogs or maybe you are just interested in shutter speed, then read on my friend.

Shutter speed was my favorite setting to learn. I had small children who moved ALL the time. I wanted to be able to capture them in the bounce houses, playing sports or just running around on the playground. My kids really LOVED when I was learning about shutter speed because they just got to play, and I took photos. On the top of your camera is a mode dial with different types of settings. – Find the “S” on most camera’s (Nikon included) or “TV” on a Canon camera (which is Time Value). This is the Shutter Priority Auto. When this setting is chosen on mode dial it means you set the shutter speed on your camera, or you get to decide how fast the lens opens and closes.

So, you can capture that moment with your kids in the air on the bouncy house with a crisp clear photo or you can decide to show the motion of them jumping with some blur. I don’t know about you, but I never really had any trouble with the blur part and my kids, it was the crisp clear action shot that my heart desired. If you want crisp clear images then we just crank that Shutter Priority, right? Welllll yes and no. There is always a give and take in life isn’t there? It’s the same with photography. If you crank the shutter priority up, you sacrifice the light coming in. Remember the blog about the exposure triangle? Shutter Speed is how fast the lens opens and closes. Remember the faucet? Do you turn it on, so a trickle comes out? Or do you turn it all the way on, so it gushes water? The higher the shutter speed the faster the lens opens and closes. On a full sunny day outdoors that’s not a big deal but if you are indoors you will have to decide how much light you can give up and still have a photo that is not just black.

The trick is to…

1. set the camera to the “S” (or “TV” if you have a Canon)

2. set the ISO as well and I recommend setting it at 200-400 for this experiment if you are outside.

3. The camera will decide your aperture or F-stop for you.

Make sure to check out what the other settings are as you adjust the shutter speed. Here are some examples:

: Shutter speed 60 F1/20 ISO 400

: Shutter speed 200 f 1/11 ISO 400

: Shutter speed 1000 f 1/5 ISO 400

I didn’t edit these photos so you can see how they come straight out of the camera. You can see the blur on my dog Layla in her tail in the first picture but it’s not there in the 3rd.

A New York Christmas

I had another blog all written for today but as I sit here in the stillness of my house waiting for my family to wake up, I realized that today is Christmas! With that in mind I wanted to write a blog about taking photos in New York City the year we decided to spend Christmas day traveling to NYC to see my host sister from Germany and meet her family.

NY subway December 26th

This is one of the very first photos I took in NYC, for me this photo was eerie because we arrived in NYC December 25th at night and went straight to our air b-n-b. December 26th, we went into the city to meet my host sister from Germany and the subway was completely empty. Every movie I’ve ever seen with a NY subway in it was packed to the hilt. But not on December 26th.

The top picture was taken from the top of the Empire State Building. It’s icon but nothing fancy, just the typical photo taken from the top of the iconic building that is on every post card you see.

The bottom photo was taken from a boat that was going to the Statue of Liberty looking back onto the island of NYC. It is also a icon photo and one that needed to be taken even though you could pick up a post card with this same photo at every corner.

St. Patrick's Cathedral candles

This photo is from inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral. It was a beautiful church and I have many photos that I loved but this one in particular stands out to me because you could light a candle for someone who has passed on. The beauty in that was something I wanted to remember. This is what photos are for me….the small things that I want to remember later.

Lady Liberty

As you travel you want to take the photos of the celebrated and well-known locations. The Statue of Liberty was one of those for me. Remember to take photos at different times of day.

9/11 Memorial

There are no words to express the feelings I had when I went to the 9/11 memorial.

I wanted a photo that could possibly express that feeling.

It is all about the people for me in photography. While I love taking pictures of iconic places is more about the iconic people in my life.

HELP! I want to organize my old photos!

Steps To Organize Your Photos

Step 1: Pull your old photos out. Take out the boxes or the old albums or the envelopes that are holding your old photos.

Step 2. Purchase this box from Amazon or Micheals or wherever you can find it. Here is a link: PhotoBox16Cases

Step 3: Decide how to sort the photos. This is the most IMPORTANT step. You can choose to sort your photos in whatever categories that make sense to you but I personally found sorting them by “years” works for me. I put “years” in quotes because honestly some photos I wasn’t 100% sure what year and found it best to put them in years by groups of important times in my life. Below is how I grouped my personal photos so you can see what it looks like.

Before 1975 Mom’s side of the family (I was born in 1975)
Before 1975 Dad’s side of the family (I was born in 1975)
1975 – 1987 (Birth to 6th grade)
1987-1989 (Junior High – 7th and 8th grade)
1989-1993 (High School – storage boxes split out for times I was overseas)
1993 – 2000 (College until I moved across country to MI)
2000-2008 (Living in MI before my daughter was born)
2008-2010 (Living in MI after my daughter was born. I have a lot of boxes for this time. Anyone else have that happen after their first born?)
2010-current (Living in AZ. I don’t have many photos printed out anymore because most are in store in the cloud.)
Within each of these categories I split them out smaller based on the number of photos I had. For instance, my engagement photos were many so there is one box dedicated to just those photos with the year on it.

Step 4. Go through old photos… This whole process only works if you actually take the time to go through your old photos.

Step 4a. Sort them (see step 3 – you can add labels to the boxes to help you keep them sorted.)

Step 4b. Throw some away. You know which one’s I’m talking about, the ones that are blurry or the person’s face is half cut off and you don’t even know who it is. Yes, throw them away. I give your permission.

Step 4c. Give away or throw away the ones you have quadtriplicates of. I just made that word up, but it means a random number of old photos that were purchased to give out and were apparently never given out, so they ended up in a box.

Step 5. Go out to celebrate your HUGE achievement. No seriously, go reward yourself. Woot, woot!

This checklist was created to help you feel confident and not like you are missing something before your next photo session. It is not meant to be fully comprehensive though because each family is a beautiful mix of different personalities. Encompassing all of these would be impossible and would take away the uniqueness of each family.

Plan AND try on outfits a week in advance. (If you want more on how to pick out family outfits for a photoshoot you’ll want to check out this blog it talks about the why, where and how to pick outfits out for your family.)

Choosing An Outfit For Your Next Family Photoshoot

Decide on must any poses and/or props. Communicate this to the photographer. You don’t have to come with poses in mind but sometimes you already know you want to be dipped for a romantic kiss. Props, aren’t necessary, but some families like to bring their favorite teams jerseys for a photo to represent. Whatever prop you bring will be unique to your family.

Check nail polish. And don’t forget your toes if you are wearing open toed shoes. You don’t want chipped Halloween orange with your flowy neutral dress.
Roots of your hair. If you plan to do a touch, up remember that many times we end up with a little color around our faces before we wash it a few times.

Find your anti-reflective glasses and at the minimum make sure you don’t have your transitional glasses with you. Unless of course you want to have sunglasses on in every photo.
Get a good night’s sleep. I know this sounds obvious but staying up picking out just the right outfit isn’t going to matter if you look tired in every photo.

Pack accessories, a brush, chap stick, lipstick, Kleenex, water, comfy shoes, hair spray & props if desired.
Make sure to feed everyone and keep everyone hydrated. No one likes to smile if they are hangry. Living in AZ hydration is important.

Empty pockets and remove hair ties. These will be the little things that will stand out later.

Double check directions and how much time you need to get to the location. It’s always good to check the driving directions at the time frame you will be leaving on a different day to see if traffic is an issue. Remember some photoshoots occur at rush hour traffic.

IS TO RELAX AND BE IN THE MOMENT WITH THE ONES YOU LOVE.

How to look amazing at YOUR senior photoshoot!

Senior year is filled with so many lifelong memories…homecoming, college applications, prom, senior trips, football games, senior pranks, and so much more. It is a time that ends one chapter in your life and starts another. This is what your senior photos can capture with a little thought ahead of time. Your photos are all about telling your story. The most important thing I want you to know is that you DO NOT have to be a model. And truth be told I don’t want you to be a model because our goal is to capture YOU. Your senior photos are all about YOU and no one knows you better.

As you think about your upcoming session, write down the answers to the following questions.

1. What your hobbies are, how you spend your free time or where you volunteer.

2. Ask a few friends or family members to describe you in one word.

3. What is your favorite…. article of clothing, color, movie, food, etc.

4. What you want to do after school.

5. Any fancy dresses or outfits that you wore to homecoming or a wedding recently.

6. If you like wearing hats, chunky necklaces, big rings, scarves, fun shoes, etc.

7. Any afterschool activities like sports, academic clubs, etc. If you have a letterman jacket or something specific, you wear when participating in that activity.

As you write out the answers a few things will jump out at you that will help you pick out your outfits.

Kendall loves art! But she really loves to paint and when she is not painting, you find her at Michaels buying more canvas or paints. She also loves sunflowers! This love of sunflowers came from her mother. She doesn’t wear any shoe if it’s not comfy and so has a variety of different tennis shoes. She used to play volleyball, but quick years ago and never took up another sport. She likes sleeping in and hanging out with her friends. Her personality is pretty chill. She decides she want’s photos that will incorporate her love of art, and sunflowers as well as her favorite pair of shoes.

Jeneyah went to her uncle’s casual wedding in September and wore a cute striped jump suit that she loves. She is a part of the guitar club at school and her friends nicknamed her sunshine because she is always happy. She has decided she is bringing denim back and has lots of cute denim dresses that she wears. Jeneyah decides to use the cute jump suit from the wedding, a denim dress that work with her cap and gown and a pair of black dress pants and top for a more sophisticated look. She plans to bring her guitar to the shoot. She loves the park down the street from her house and it holds lots of childhood memories there for her.

Litchfield Park, AZ

Bailey doesn’t really participate in any afterschool activities, but she loves jeans and big bows. She loves nature and being up north at her family’s cabin. She loves the simple things in life like her family and her dog. But what truly defines her is the big bows she wears. Bailey brings along ripped jeans with a leopard print shirt and a matching bow. She also brings her favorite jacket and a red shirt to wear underneath with one of her big red bows. For her last outfit she chooses a long black sleeved shirt and keeps her signature red bow.

Sunflower Field Love

I did a short stint as a school tour guide at a local farm here in Buckeye, AZ for a few years every October. I always volunteered in the garden section of the tour because got to walk a lot, I enjoyed seeing the kids faces when they pulled out a huge yellow squash straight from the garden AND I was right next to the beautiful sunflower field. While I loved working at the farm I knew I wanted to take beautiful photos in those sunflowers long before the farm opened up to photographers to do just that.

Large Family Photos in AZ Sunflowers

This family is “A”dorable with a capital A and this momma is “A”mazing with a capital A. You can tell in part because she was able to get all 10 kids dressed in coordinating blue and yellow outfits and out the door. Sometimes you get a glimpse into someone’s heart and you can tell just how incredible they are. That is this family.

2021 was a hard year to graduate from high school. But it was also an unprecedented year and so that needed to be documented. What better way then using an adorable sunflower mask on a gorgeous girl in a beautiful sunflower field. Bringing The Fun With Props

Uh, I love props! I feel like props really show case a kid’s personality and make the photoshoot fun. I learned early on that if it’s not fun then kids don’t cooperate and you feel defeated. So, when my kids were younger I loved to set up props and take photos. I would do this for holidays, birthday parties, back to school, yearly birthdays or just because say one of them got a new homemade jacket and hat from Grandma. Pretty much anything was an excuse for a photoshoot using props.

USING CLOTHES AS PHOTO PROPS

In 2012 my mom made my daughter this vintage looking blueberry coat and hat. As a teenager I used to LOVE the photographer Kim Andersen. If you’ve never seen her work you should Google her. She is amazing! As soon as I saw that coat and hat I knew I wanted my very own Kim Andersen photoshoot with my daughter. I was ecstatic when I snapped the photo below. It is my favorite of this Kim Andersen inspired photoshoot because not only did she use vintage clothing, red brick walls, she also used roses! Uh, be still my heart!

CLOTHING CENTERED PHOTOSHOOTS

I loved that photo so much that I continued to take photos that were inspired by clothing my mom made my kids, including an adorable blue checked dress that I used in two different photoshoots. One in 2013 for a Little Red Riding hood photoshoot in Payson and the other in 2015 for an Alice in Wonderland photoshoot that my son insisted he be a part of. So, I threw some bunny ears on him and told them to have a tea party. I almost cried when I saw how cute there playing together.

VALENTINE'S DAY KISSING BOOTH

Another time I set up a Valentine’s Day Kissing Booth. After taking my own kids photos I invited neighbors and friends over, including one who ran a preschool, so I could take more photos in the Kissing Booth. It was so much fun to see all these kiddos laughing and having a ball with the different props. One of the mom’s actually said I captured her two daughters personalities perfectly. Then I set up a hot coco bar/candy cane bar for my own personal Christmas photos. The kids had a blast and I got some truly adorable photos that I will cherish forever.

BRING OUT YOUR CHILDS PERSONALITY IN A PHOTOSHOOT

I also took yearly photos of my kids and niece trying to find different things that represented who the kids were as they changed from year to year. To name a few I have two Disney princess photoshoots, a unicorn photoshoot and an Audrey Hepburn photoshoot with my niece as she grew up in front of me wanting to be every bit of a girly girly as she could be. I remember one day I walked her to school and she wore new sparkle glitter shoes that rubbed her heal until it bled. I put a band aid on it with Neosporin to help it feel better but the next day she still wore those shoes and when I asked her why she would wear them again she said “Because they’re pretty Aunt Kimmy.”

My son on the other hand loved every super hero imaginable and so setting up a superhero photoshoot for him in 2016 was one of many. He just played and I took photos. He wanted to run about shooting me with webs and “flying” with his homemade cape on the swing. But one of my favorites is capturing him mid-run with his arms out and his cape flying behind him all while in his super hero undies and his costumes on the clothes line behind him. It’s not perfectly focused but it shows the true joy he experienced in playing a super hero. But we won’t share that photo so as not to embarrass him.

For parties I set up elaborate photo booths including a “murder booth” for a CLUE party and a full super hero city landscape for another birthday. I feel like I’ve captured my kids in so many different ways that when I look back over these photos it just makes my heart happy. I smile every time.

Picking an Outdoor Phoenix, AZ Photoshoot Location

As a photographer I see various locations as I go about my day to day life and think I want to do a photoshoot there….and there….and there too. So I understand that deciding on where to go for a photoshoot can be a hard choice but here is a bit about what different locations in the greater Phoenix area can offer. DESERT
Living in AZ we live in a desert and are surrounded daily by it’s beauty. It took me moving to MI for a decade to return and realize the stunning artistry that the desert provides. There are a lot of different locations that offer the exquisiteness of this backdrop so if you want a photoshoot that brings with it mountains in the background and the elegance of the variety of cacti and succulents then a desert location might be perfect for you.

DOWNTOWN/RURUL
Phoenix has an impressive downtown area with graffiti and various walls, buildings and structures that can be used to create a gorgeous array of photos for a gallery. If you want a more modern backdrop and a rural feel with an edgy look then I would recommend a downtown location. Keep in mind there are other spots that offer the downtown feel besides downtown Phoenix.

HISTORIC FEEL
There are a few places that offer a historic feel to them with older buildings that can be used to create a more hometown feel to a photoshoot. If you love older buildings and shops that give your photos a more tranquil setting then you may want to consider using a historic sight and there are a few around the Phoenix area that are perfect.

GREENERY/NATURE
If you are looking for green grass and trees or flowers then we have a few options. Trees and grass are so different from what we normally see here that you may want something that stands out from the typical desert scenery. Flowers are a different story though. There is a local sunflower field that is open for 2 weeks in October so you will need to book early to ensure your spot. (There is an entrance fee that you will need pay per person besides the session fee.) Flowers here bloom usually in March but there is no set time for the beauty of the desert flowers that bloom so you will need to be flexible about the date.

SCHOOL
If you are a high school senior or a college graduate you may want to consider a photoshoot at your school. Are you an athlete? Maybe some photos on one of your schools ball fields? Are you proud of your alma mater? Maybe photos in front of Old Main? So if the school spirit strikes you let me know.

Sometimes locations that you may not even consider produce beautiful images so trusting your photographer to pick out your location is also an option. Picking out a location can be a fun and exciting process! Pick a place the makes you smile and brings your heart joy and you it will show in the photos.
