Christmas Minis 2025: Joy, PJ’s & Pure Holiday Magic

There’s just something different about Christmas Minis. Maybe it’s the matching pajama sets, or the kids buzzing with holiday energy, or the way parents soften the moment they step into the warm glow of the studio. This set of photoshoots were a little pocket of joy in the middle of the holiday rush. I was reminded—over and over—that the real beauty of these sessions isn’t the backdrop or the props… it’s the people who walk through my door. This year, three families brought the magic to life in the best way.

Natalie, Frank & Liana — Cozy PJ’s and the Sweetest Energy

When I say this family has become part of my life, I mean it. Natalie, Frank, and sweet Liana walked in wearing matching Christmas PJ’s AND reindeer slippers, and I swear my heart grew three sizes. They’re the kind of people who make you feel instantly at home—fun, warm, and always up for anything. And little Liana? She was ready for every prompt, every silly idea, every smile. A total doll. Photographing her is like photographing pure joy, and having their family in the studio felt like spending time with dear friends, which they are.

Misha, Melissa & Baby Jordan — Toddler Smiles & Full-Heart Moments

I first met this beautiful family in the sunflower fields earlier this year, so seeing them again for Christmas Minis was so great. They showed up in matching PJ’s, carrying that same calm, loving energy that makes their photos so genuine. And Jordan? Oh, she came to steal the show. Full toddler mode, full smiles, full personality. Toddlers are unpredictable, and that’s exactly what makes them magical. Between the books, ornaments, little lights, and quick pivots, we caught those real toddler giggles—the kind you wish you could bottle up forever.

The Ratiu Family — Laughter, Energy & Kids Who Love Big

When the Ratiu family arrived, I already knew it’s going to be pure fun. Their kids are these bright, active, personality-filled little humans who clearly know they’re loved deeply and encouraged to be themselves. During their session, we had a fast-moving, joy-packed whirlwind of moments—and I adored every second. The best part? When I asked Becky to pick up Ryan and suggested Dad scoop up Lorelie, and both kids wanted Mom, Becky laughed and said, “That never happens.” It was the sweetest surprise—one of those tiny moments that makes a whole session unforgettable.

As the Christmas Minis wrapped up this year, I kept thinking about how much love walked through those doors. Families showing up in their comfiest PJ’s, kids bringing their big personalities, parents soaking in a rare slow moment together—every bit of it filled my heart. These sessions are fast, fun, chaotic in the best way, and packed with stories I’ll remember for years. And honestly, that’s why I do this. It’s not just about the photos—it’s about the relationships, the trust, and the tiny in-between moments that become part of your family’s history. I’m grateful for every single one.

The Manning Family — Cozy Christmas Moments & One More Little Miracle on the Way

Jenna and Josh are the kind of sweet, relaxed humans that make you feel like you’ve known them forever — probably because my husband Ben is friends with Josh. LOL! And Ollie, their energetic, hilarious 3-year-old, is the sunshine beam that ties it all together.

We decided on the Christmas Boho Room at Vision Studios in Goodyear, AZ — light, cozy, airy, and the perfect mix of festive without turning into Santa’s living room. They wanted Christmas photos and the sweetest surprise: a baby announcement for their newest little boy joining the family next year.

The Warm-Up

Ollie walked in with classic “I’m-three-and-I-decide-my-own-vibe” energy. Totally normal. Totally expected. Totally fine. So I did what I always do with the littles — I tried to connect with him. I decided to ask for his help because kids that age love to “help”.

“Hey buddy… want to help me set my camera?”

Instant spark.

He got to push the shutter a few times and even snapped a couple photos of Mom and Dad. And that was it — we were officially besties.

That Moment That Made Me Melt

There’s always one moment in every session that stops me in my tracks.

For the Mannings?
It was when Ollie leaned into Jenna’s belly…
and started singing to his little brother.

I swear, if my camera wasn’t pressed to my face, they would’ve seen me straight-up melting onto the boho rug.

The Fun Stuff

The “photobomb your parents” prompt?
Ollie delivered.
Rather than rush in he stood in front them looking all kids of shy and cute. Absolute perfection.

We also played with a few setups — the cozy boho room, a touch of Christmas, and Jenna’s props: the sweetest baby announcement sign and a tiny crocheted brown bear outfit that made remember Hank in his monkey crocket outfit.

A Moment in Time They’ll Never Get Back

As a mom, this part hits me every time I photograph a family expecting their next baby.

Being a family of three is a special kind of magic — one you don’t fully recognize until it’s about to shift into something new.

I still remember Dixie listening to my belly when Hank was in there, like she was already practicing being the big sister she’d become. It’s a moment that sticks with you.

Be the Banks: A Photographer’s Letter to Moms Letting Go

As a photographer, I’ve met a lot of parents. Some hover nervously during sessions, some try to coax “real” smiles out of their kids with bribery or goofy noises. And some just watch—soaking it in, quietly stunned by how quickly their child is growing up (this goes for toddlers to the graduating teen.)

But it wasn’t during a photo session that one of the most meaningful parenting conversations I’ve had took place. It was through a simple, honest question from another mom:
“How do you think my son is doing?”

She didn’t ask it in passing. She genuinely wanted to know—was he on track? Was he doing okay? Her 6-year-old had spent time with my family (my teenage son had been babysitting), and she wanted an outside perspective.

What she didn’t realize is that her question unlocked something in me. I started writing her a message—and it turned into something much bigger than feedback on her son because every time I started it I realized that it wasn’t really about how her son was doing. It became a reminder to myself, and now maybe to you too.

He’s Not Yours to Tame—You’re Just His Banks That Keep Him from Spilling Over

Here’s what I wrote:

J is like a river—sometimes calm and still, sometimes wild and raging. It’s not your job to tame the river. It’s your job to be the banks that keep him from spilling over.

That gem came from my daughter’s kindergarten teacher (Mrs. Tassin – who by the way is amazing!), and it’s stuck with me ever since. Our job isn’t to smooth every rough edge or control the current. It’s to be present, stable, and strong enough to let them flow and still feel safe.

And you know what? That applies to parenting and photography.

Through the Lens: Why These Messy Moments Matter

I’ve photographed enough toddlers running amuck and teens blinking awkwardly in their cap and gown to know one thing for sure: the “perfect” moments are rarely the ones that move us.

It’s the messy ones.
The in-between ones.
The ones that feel too normal to matter—until they’re gone. (Ask me how I know? 14- and 17-year-old kiddos that’s how – where did time go? No seriously!)

That’s why I want every mom to know: even if you think today isn’t photo-worthy… it is.
Even if your kid is clingy, grumpy, silly, or hiding behind you—it matters.
Because one day, a photo you almost didn’t take might become the thing that reminds you who they were—and who you were—right now.

Letting Go Starts Early (and Hurts Anyway)

Here’s what I wish more moms knew—especially the ones booking family photos with toddlers to Junior Higher family sessions with me:
Letting go doesn’t start when they pack for college.

It starts when they walk into kindergarten with their backpack half their size.
It starts when they ride their bike down the street without looking back.
It starts when they stop asking you to read them a story before bed at night.
It starts way before we’re ready.

If we don’t start letting them go slowly, from the beginning, we’ll end up clinging to them like a life preserver in the teen years—just when they need space the most.

A Love Letter to Moms (Including Me)

So, here’s what I told that beautiful momma, and what I want to tell every mom reading this:

Trust your gut.
Surround yourself with professionals who respect your instincts.
Let comparison go—it’s a thief, not a teacher.
Your child’s success doesn’t define your worth.
Their meltdowns don’t define your failure. (*this took me awhile to realize)
Give them choices. Help them learn that they always have a choice by there are consequences for those choices.
Love them the hardest when they seem the most unlovable because honestly that is usually when they need it the most.
Celebrate the mistakes while the consequences are still small. (*this one was tough for me too, but I see it so clearly now.)
Apologize when you mess up and you will, I promise. Let them see that side of love and forgiveness too.
And above all—show up. On the hard days, the boring days, the magical days.

You Don’t Need to Be a “Good” Mom

That phrase—good mom—it triggers me in a way I can’t even truly explain. People told me all the time I was a good mom but what does that even mean?

So, forget “good.”
Be a loving mom.
Be a present mom.
Be a mom who listens, who advocates, who keeps showing up—especially on the messy days. Be his mom. His steady. His safe place. The banks to his river. That’s more than good. Being a mom is hard, people say that all the time, but we never truly understand it until we have our own kids. Learning to accept them for who they are in the moment, who we dream they will become and who they are becoming is difficult to wrestle with, but every parent has to do it, the question is will you do it with grace and kindness.

Take the Picture Anyway

Even if their hair isn’t perfect. Even if they won’t smile. Even if you’re in your own season of exhaustion. Take the picture anyway. One day, that photo might become your parenting time capsule. And when you’re ready to preserve that season with intention, I’m here. With my camera. With my heart. With a full understanding of how fast it all goes. Let’s freeze just one little moment because we don’t remember days; we remember moments.

5 Photo-Friendly Family and Senior Locations in the West Valley

The West Valley is home to me—always has been. I grew up at 83rd and Indian School, went to high school at Tolleson Union High, was part of the first class to grace the halls of Estrella Mountain Community College, and even had my baby boy at a hospital right off the 101. I did wander off for about a decade, but the desert’s siren song called me back.

I drive this area daily, and while the Valley in general is packed with beautiful spots for photography, I’m sticking to the West Valley today. My list has a little something for everyone—variety is the spice of life, after all. Here are my top 5 spots:

1. Greenbelt behind the Goodyear Civic Center

This is hands-down my current favorite. Picture mountains rising in the distance, surrounded by lush greenery (a true desert unicorn!). A short walk away, you’ll find a vibrant business district filled with beautiful buildings, textured walls, a cute courtyard, and even a photogenic parking garage if that’s your thing.

2. Downtown Avondale
Skip the trek to downtown Phoenix and head here instead. It’s charming, with little shops and restaurants that give it a cozy vibe. The graffiti walls change regularly, thanks to some seriously talented local artists—perfect if you’re into that edgy look.

3. Old Litchfield
Old Litchfield oozes charm with its towering palm trees, a picturesque lake, and that iconic turquoise door—ideal for sunrise or sunset shots. The area is also dotted with beautiful churches that make great backdrops.

4. The White Tanks
When you want classic desert vibes—think giant cacti and majestic mountains in the distance—this spot can’t be beat. It gets busy (because it’s that good), so I recommend going on a weekday to dodge the crowds.

5. Vision Studios in Goodyear, AZ

For indoor shoots, Vision Studios is the place. They’re always changing up the rooms, so check their website to see what’s currently on offer. This blue room is in constant rotation for a refresh, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Pro tip: Looking for something simple? They almost always have a killer white farmhouse shiplap wall, which photographs like a dream.

Sunrise Magic in Avondale: Our Duck-tastic Setup

There are some sessions that just stick with you—this was definitely one of them.

Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing a mother-daughter duo and their five newest, fluffiest family members: DUCKLINGS. Yep, you read that right. Not dogs, not kittens—baby ducks. And let me tell you, it was every bit as adorable and chaotic as it sounds.

We met up at sunrise here in Avondale, AZ to ensure the light was perfect, and the setup was simple but magical. A metal tub for swimming time, a clear umbrella to catch that soft light and even a duck or two, and even a Kate backdrop featuring none other than rubber ducky’s. Because if we’re gonna do ducks, we’re gonna do ducks.

Cuddles, Chaos, and Duckling Swims in the West Valley

Mom and daughter cozied up on a bench, smiling as the ducklings swam around like they owned the place. Then we hit the ground—literally. They laid down to get eye-level with their fluffy crew, laughing as the ducklings waddled off in perfect, uncoordinated chaos.

At one point, we had the ducklings safely tucked away and then released them to started following the mom and daughter around like tiny, feathery puppies. One even stood out with a lighter bill than the rest—a little ducky diva in the making.

It was precious, hilarious, and heart-melting all at once.

From Farm Babies to Feathered Friends: My Passion for Animal Photoshoots

As someone who’s photographed a fair share of farm babies at the farmers market with MM Ranch Services Mobile Petting Zoo, I’m no stranger to the animal antics. I live for these kinds of shoots. Whether your new addition has feathers, fur, hooves, or paws—I’m your gal. These fleeting moments are worth capturing, and I promise to get all the cuteness without any of the mess (okay, maybe a little mess—animals, after all).

Whew, it’s getting hot in there! So hot, in fact, that I’ve decided to take a photo booth hiatus at the Waddell Get Local Farmers Market until the cooler days of fall. Even with all the delicious smells and friendly faces, it’s just too much to ask folks to look their picture-perfect best while roasting in the booth. But don’t worry, I’ll be back! This past season at the market has been a blast, and I have so many sweet memories to hold onto until then.

Wrapping Up a Wildly Wonderful Year at the Waddell Farmers Market!

Wow! What a fantastic end to 2024 it’s been! As a professional photographer here in the West Valley of Phoenix, I’ve had the absolute pleasure of spending the last few months at the Get Local Waddell Farmers Market, and it’s been an absolute blast. Partnering with MM Ranch Services Mobile Petting Zoo has been such a fun experience, bringing together adorable animals and happy families for some truly memorable moments.

It’s hard to believe, but we wrapped up our last market of the year on December 15th! Looking back, it’s incredible to realize we hosted a whopping 64 mini photoshoots between October and December! That’s 65 families, couples, and individuals who now have some fun, unique photos to cherish. It’s been so rewarding meeting so many amazing people from our community each week. The energy at the market is always buzzing, and it’s been a joy to capture those special connections.

These photos from our last weekend perfectly capture the spirit of the market – pure joy and connection. The animals from MM Ranch Services are always a huge hit, and they make for such fun and engaging photos.

We even had a beautiful lady who wanted her portrait taken with Willy Nelson and Oreo, the two stunning horses of MM Ranch Services – the results were simply breathtaking! Moments like these truly make what I do so special.

But the fun doesn’t stop there! We’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be returning to the Get Local Waddell Farmers Market in January with an adorable Valentine’s Day backdrop! Get ready for some seriously cute “Barnyard Sweetheart” photos! Imagine your little ones snuggling with adorable goats, posing with fluffy bunnies, or sharing a moment with a sweet baby chicks – all against a charming Valentine’s Day setting. A Family’s Love Story: The Diaz Family

I knew I wanted to take the Diaz family’s photos the first time their beautiful daughter, Liana, sat in front of my lens at the Get Local Farmers Market in Waddell, AZ. Her brown, curious eyes and sweet smile captivated me instantly.

The Diaz family is simply heartwarming. Natalie’s gorgeous brown eyes with flecks of gold and Frank’s infectious smile lit up every frame. And little Liana, with her adorable buns and playful spirit, was the star of the show for sure.

Natalie chose a stunning desert as the family photo backdrop. Phoenix, AZ has a naturally beauty backdrop when it comes to desert photos, with towering cacti and breathtaking mountains.

The moment Liana stepped out of the car, she was full of energy and excitement. She wanted to make sure we took one funny face photo, which of course we took more than just one. Capturing her infectious joy was pure bliss for me. Watching her interact with her parents was even more heartwarming. Their love for each other was obvious, and it was a privilege to witness and document their bond.

As I went through the photos, I couldn’t help but feel a wave of emotion. This family was truly special, and I was so grateful to have been a small part of their story.

If I could shoot families like the Diaz family every day, I would do it in a heartbeat. Their love, their laughter, and their unique personalities would make every photoshoot a memorable experience.

A Sweet Holiday Photoshoots at the Get Local Waddell Farmers Market

The holiday season was in full swing at the Get Local Farmers Market, and it’s been a joy capturing these precious moments. I partnered with MM Ranch Services Mobile Petting Zoo people could choose an animal from the petting to be a part of their photoshoot. The adorable hot cocoa backdrop was perfect for these mini sessions complete with a bale of hay.

One of my favorite moments was capturing a little girl in a Santa dress with Lucy the bunny. Her eyes sparkled with delight as she cuddled sweet Lucy. It was a heartwarming sight that perfectly encapsulated the holiday spirit.

But it’s not just about the big animals. We’ve had some heartwarming moments with the smaller creatures too. One little boy’s face lit up as he held a tiny baby chick in his hands. It was a pure expression of joy that I was lucky enough to capture.

Maloy Extended Family Photoshoot

At a recent extended family photoshoot on a chilly November in Peoria, AZ. I captured the essence of what I love most about family photography. The Maloy family, dressed in timeless blues and grays, gathered for a generational portrait, from the newest member, Nash, to Great-Grandpa Dale.

This particular shoot stands out, not just for the beautiful family and the adorable little ones, but also because I was tricked by a family member, adding an unexpected layer of fun to the session.

But let’s be honest, the real stars of the show are the Maloy family themselves. Just look at them!

While capturing couple portraits during the photoshoot, I gave the usual prompt: ‘Look at me, look at each other, kiss.’ Most couples responded naturally, but one pair’s reaction was unexpected. As I gave the cue, they burst out laughing. I assumed they might be uncomfortable with public displays of affection.

After the shoot, the woman approached me with a serious tone. “We’re siblings,” she stated, and began to walk away. My heart sank as I mental went through the photos, realizing the awkward poses I’d captured knowing they were siblings. With many family members already having left due to the cold, reshooting wasn’t an option.

Just as I was processing the situation, she turned back, laughed, and confessed, “Just kidding, we’re married.” Relief washed over me as I too now started laughing.

This generational photo reminds me of one in my own house of my husband and his father and grandfather with our son so it’s pretty special to get to capture this moment. Can we just all agree that Dale is the best? He is surrounded by all his grandchildren and great grandchild and just look at his smile!

October 20, 2024 was a special day at the Get Local Farmers Market in Waddell, AZ. It was a day dedicated to the littlest ones – a day all about babies and kids!

I was there doing photoshoots filled with autumn charm, thanks to a stunning backdrop of large white barn doors adorned with vibrant fall leaves. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the adorable baby farm animals from MM Services Mobile Petting Zoo. Families, babies, and toddlers were able to cuddle with bunnies, goats, and other furry friends. The interactions were filled with laughter, joy, and pure innocence.

The weather was picture-perfect, creating a magical atmosphere for the photoshoot. The soft, natural light and the beautiful fall scenery made for some truly stunning photographs. It was captivating to see the genuine connections between the people and the animals, and I’m so grateful to have been able to capture these precious moments.

Styling Your Family Photoshoot: A Guide

As a professional photographer in Avondale, AZ, I’ve seen families struggle with choosing the perfect outfits for their photo sessions. The key to a cohesive and flattering look lies in simplicity and coordination. Here’s a simple trick I recommend: start with a “centerpiece” outfit.

Choosing Your Centerpiece

The “centerpiece” outfit should be comfortable and versatile, serving as the foundation for the rest of your family’s attire. (The “centerpiece” outfit is usually mom’s outfit. I mean really we should be the “centerpiece” anyway right?) Flowing dresses often work well for moms, adding a touch of elegance and movement. This outfit can incorporate multiple colors (about 3-4 is ideal) to provide a color palette for the rest of the family. OR be a solid color, use Pinterest to find complementary color palettes for the rest of the family if you choose a solid color. Aim for three or more colors or shades of the chosen color for a harmonious look with a base color like cream, navy blue, white, black or beige.

Coordinating the Rest of the Family

Once you’ve selected your “centerpiece” outfit, it’s time to dress the rest of the family. For the most challenging person to coordinate, choose a solid color that complements the centerpiece’s colors. For example, if the centerpiece has white for a base and then pinks, blues and yellows, you could choose a blue button-down shirt, khaki’s and black shoes for a dad.

Next, dress the children in solid colors that match the centerpiece. For instance, you could put one child in a white dress and the other in pink dress. The possibilities are endless!

Tips for a Successful Photoshoot

Keep it simple. Avoid complex patterns or graphics that can distract from the main focus: your family.
Prioritize comfort. Ensure everyone is comfortable in their outfits.
Consider the location. Choose clothing that complements the backdrop.
Have fun! A relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere will show in your photos.

Halloween is just around the corner, and what better way to capture the magic of the season than with photos of adorable super hero’s and scary pirates? Whether you have little ghosts, ghouls, or furry friends dressed up in adorable costumes, there are plenty of opportunities to create lasting memories.

Here are five tips to help you take amazing Halloween photos of your kids and pets:

Lighting is key

Opt for natural light whenever possible. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can create harsh shadows. If shooting indoors, use soft, diffused light. Lighting is the key to every photo. Halloween is a great time to play with shadows to create a dramatic affect.

Get down to their level

Take photos from your child or pet’s perspective to capture their unique viewpoint. Not like the above photo!

Background matters

Choose a background that complements your child or pet’s costume. A pumpkin patch, a spooky desert (here in AZ), or even your own backyard or front door can be great options.

This blog will be quick and to the point to get you on your way to setting up a spooky Halloween photobooth area. A photo booth is a great way to capture memories and create hilarious keepsakes.

Here are some tips for creating a spooky photo booth at home:

Set up a backdrop:

As a family photographer in the Phoenix, Arizona area, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing some truly beautiful moments for families. I understand that the day of a family photo session can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when you have young children. I used to be there with 2 kiddos myself. That’s why I’ve put together these tips to help you out.

Before Your Family Photo Session

Coordinate outfits: Choosing outfits can be a hurdle but honestly just find things that complement each other and reflect your family’s style. Maybe you are a jeans and t-shirt kinda family or your family dresses up every Sunday for church. If you want more detailed information on the why, where and how of picking outfits for a photoshoot check out the blog below.
Prepare your children: Talk to your children about the photoshoot. Let them know it’s going to be fun and exciting! Feel free to show them a photo of the photographer so they know who they will be seeing.
Pack essentials: Don’t forget to bring snacks (nothing blue or sticky please) and water.

Relax and have fun: The most important thing is to enjoy the experience and let your personalities shine through. Seriously #1!
Be patient: Children can be unpredictable, so be patient and go with the flow. It took me a long time to learn this.

Capture candid moments: Let your children be themselves and capture those natural, spontaneous moments. Those are the best!

After the Family Photo Shoot:

Do something fun as a family: Go out for ice cream to continue the fun or go home, blow some bubbles and play a family game. Truly embrace the experience and let the giggles and laughter continue.
Snap a family selfie: Snap a selfie of your family all dressed up and post it letting people know you just had family photos done.

So, you’ve got a photoshoot coming up, and you’re feeling a bit jittery? Totally normal! But let me tell you, there are some lesser-known tips and tricks that can help you rock that session with confidence.

First off, let’s address the elephant in the room: our changing bodies. As we sail through our 40s, our bodies go through some pretty wild transformations. I feel this to my very bones since I’ve already gone through menopause. But you know what? Those changes are what make us uniquely beautiful. Let’s learn to embrace them! Instead of focusing on what you perceive as flaws, celebrate what makes you, well, YOU. Isn’t that what we want our daughters to do?

Family Photo Session Checklist

This checklist was created to help you feel confident and not like you are missing something before your next photo session. It is not meant to be fully comprehensive though because each family is a beautiful mix of different personalities. Encompassing all of these would be impossible and would take away the uniqueness of each family.

Plan AND try on outfits a week in advance. (If you want more on how to pick out family outfits for a photoshoot you’ll want to check out this blog it talks about the why, where and how to pick outfits out for your family.)

Choosing An Outfit For Your Next Family Photoshoot

Decide on must any poses and/or props. Communicate this to the photographer. You don’t have to come with poses in mind but sometimes you already know you want to be dipped for a romantic kiss. Props, aren’t necessary, but some families like to bring their favorite teams jerseys for a photo to represent. Whatever prop you bring will be unique to your family.

Check nail polish. And don’t forget your toes if you are wearing open toed shoes. You don’t want chipped Halloween orange with your flowy neutral dress.
Roots of your hair. If you plan to do a touch, up remember that many times we end up with a little color around our faces before we wash it a few times.

Find your anti-reflective glasses and at the minimum make sure you don’t have your transitional glasses with you. Unless of course you want to have sunglasses on in every photo.
Get a good night’s sleep. I know this sounds obvious but staying up picking out just the right outfit isn’t going to matter if you look tired in every photo.

Pack accessories, a brush, chap stick, lipstick, Kleenex, water, comfy shoes, hair spray & props if desired.
Make sure to feed everyone and keep everyone hydrated. No one likes to smile if they are hangry. Living in AZ hydration is important.

Empty pockets and remove hair ties. These will be the little things that will stand out later.

Double check directions and how much time you need to get to the location. It’s always good to check the driving directions at the time frame you will be leaving on a different day to see if traffic is an issue. Remember some photoshoots occur at rush hour traffic.

IS TO RELAX AND BE IN THE MOMENT WITH THE ONES YOU LOVE.
