When Everything Goes Wrong… and Then Turns Out Better Than Planned
11/9/2025 — KVP Creator Team Downtown Shoot
When I tell you this shoot was supposed to be simple, I mean simple.
I checked the downtown schedule in the summer — nothing.
Checked again the morning of — still nothing.
Perfect. Easy. Science Center. 4:30 PM. Golden light. Restroom nearby. Maybe even a taco before the girls arrived.
But apparently downtown Phoenix said, “Girl, not today.”
Because when Ben and I got there after a shoot in Peoria, it was like someone dropped a festival, a concert, and a parade on top of each other. People everywhere. Traffic everywhere. Parking prices that made me want to laugh and throw up at the same time. $25… $40… $50? No thank you.
At first I told myself, It’s fine, I can pivot.
And then — I absolutely broke into full panic mode.
This is the part most people never see.
I internalize everything.
On the outside, I’m calm.
On the inside?
A full psychological yard sale.
But Ben…
Ben is my steady.
My “it’s okay” when nothing feels okay.
My lighthouse.
He sees right through my quiet meltdown and somehow still sees the beauty under it.
Twenty years in, and he’s still the reason I breathe through the chaos instead of letting it swallow me.
Meanwhile, I’m texting the girls:
“Hold tight. Don’t drive into this mess. I’ll tell you where to go as soon as I know it’s safe.”
Because the Creator Team is basically a group of teen models who can drive themselves, and nothing spikes mom-photographer adrenaline faster than imagining five confident teenage girls trying to navigate gridlocked downtown Phoenix alone. Especially when one is my very own daughter.
We looped the area again.
And again.
And again.
Every spot was either terrible lighting, too many people, unsafe, or outrageously expensive parking.
I was so close to canceling.
Truly.
I was near tears.
And then…
Our final loop.
A tiny side street.
A parking meter that by some miracle said $1.25 an hour.
Parking spots enough for everyone!!!
Golden light hitting the buildings just right.
White brick walls.
A wall covered in sprawling green vines.
An alleyway with the coolest urban texture.
A tree-lined street sprinkled with tiny white lights.
It was like someone whispered,
“Here. Here’s the spot you needed all along.”
I exhaled for the first time in an hour.
The girls arrived — dressed to the nines, perfection like always.
Dixie in her long navy sparkle dress with a black shawl and boots — my sweet girl who’s stretching herself as she leans into college next year. I can’t even type that without wanting to cry.
Alison in a sleek black prom dress, confident as ever with her long red hair flowing.
Sabrina, a sweetheart with just the right amount of sass, rocking a bright red dress and heels.
Neveah, pure model energy, in gold and green with black boots.
Selena, effortless in a maroon button-down, black slacks, and tie.
And they lit up that location like it was the original plan all along.
We were moving fast, following the light, grabbing every backdrop we could — the white brick, the vines, the alleyway, the trees.
And then it happened.
A train rolled through and stopped traffic.
It wasn’t a busy street to begin with but now the whole street was frozen in place in one direction.
I didn’t even think.
I yelled, “Run to the middle! Just pose!”
They sprinted out, threw on their “I know exactly what I’m doing” faces, hit their poses instantly, and I snapped the shot.
Two seconds.
One perfect moment.
Urban energy.
Their confidence.
The train.
The vibe.
It’s my favorite photo of the entire shoot.
This team…
I can’t even describe what they mean to me.
Watching them grow, and watching the kindness they show me as I grow — there are no words big enough.
This day taught me (again):
Pivot. Then pivot again. And then do whatever you can to make it work.
Because sometimes the plan falls apart so the real magic can show up.
And on 11/9/25, it absolutely did.
