There are some seniors who walk in front of the camera and instantly feel like sunshine — and this girl is absolutely one of them. She’s a member of my KVP Creator Team, my daughter’s best friend, and one of the sweetest, most confident girls I’ve ever photographed. When I reached out to ask is she wanted to do her senior session at the Sweet Flower Home sunflower fields in Buckeye, AZ, I already knew it was going to be good… even if the sun decided to bring its full desert attitude.
We shot from 3:45–4:15 PM, right in that window where the West Valley light isn’t playing nice and the shadows are out for blood. And just to keep us on our toes, the sunflowers were at the tail end of their season — which honestly made the whole thing feel perfectly imperfect. A little rustic, a little wild, and totally her.
Her Confidence Carried the Session
She showed up in an outfit that was pure her: jeans and a white button-down with sunflowers on it. She chose it to match the field but it also matched her personality. Confident. Simple. Sweet. Full of character.
This is why she’s on my Creator Team.
She loves to model, she knows how to move, and those big brown eyes? She knows exactly how to use them.
Even in harsh light, she made my job ridiculously easy.
Jeremiah Came Along, and Honestly? I’m Glad He Did
Her boyfriend Jeremiah came with us, and I pulled him into the session immediately. Teen boys are usually a coin toss in senior photos — but not this kid.
He ran behind her and scooped her up when I asked me to do it.
They walked together between the rows of sunflowers like it was a movie scene.
I had him whisper something in her ear… and she absolutely lost it giggling.
Even a simple look from him brought out her best, most genuine smile.
These are the moments I love capturing during senior girl photoshoots — the real ones.
A Senior With Big Plans
She currently attends The Odyssey Preparatory Academy and studies construction through West-MEC, which fits her strength and determination perfectly. She also works at a movie theater, which cracks me up because she has the presence and confidence of someone who could easily be on the screen.
She’s graduating this year, and knowing her as long as I have… this one hits a little harder. Photographing your daughter’s best friend comes with its own wave of emotion. I kept catching myself thinking, “How did we get here already?”
Packing Personality Into a 30-Minute Session
Because we only had half an hour in the sunflower field, I focused on images that showed exactly who she is:
-
Her holding sunflowers in front of her face
-
Her arms raised, making hearts or peace signs against the sky
-
Shots where the flowers framed her eyes
-
Candid laughs with Jeremiah that I didn’t even have to direct
These are the photos moms love — the ones that look like the girl they know.
What I Want Senior Moms to Know
I get it.
I’m a mom.
I know how much these photos matter — not because they’re “cute,” but because they mark the end of an entire chapter of your life.
And I promise you this: I connect with senior girls. I understand how to make them feel comfortable, seen, and celebrated, even in quick sessions or harsh lighting or when the sunflowers are hanging on for dear life.
If you’re looking for senior pictures in the West Valley, especially sunflower field sessions in Buckeye, I’d be honored to photograph your teen next.
