Sunrise & Skyline: An Eagle Scout’s Senior Session at Skyline Regional Park

When Elijah and his parents first walked up, I knew right away this shoot was going to be fun. You can feel it sometimes—before a camera even starts snapping. It was still dark, that quiet kind of dark that only happens right before sunrise, and that’s just how sunrise sessions go. You arrive early because the sun doesn’t wait, and once it comes up, it comes up fast. There was laughter, easy conversation, and that calm energy that comes from a family that genuinely enjoys being together. Those first few minutes always tell me a lot, and with Elijah, I knew this session was going to be special.

Elijah wanted something in the desert, and he chose Skyline Park in Buckeye because it was close to home. His family had a lot on their plates at the time—packing, moving houses, juggling all the things families juggle—and keeping it nearby mattered. What made the location even more meaningful was the history behind it. His dad had a hand in putting together the bridge that leads into several of the trails there. I love when a place isn’t just pretty, but personal. It adds a layer you can’t fake. We shot as the Arizona sky started to glow, the desert slowly waking up around us, and it felt exactly right for him.

Elijah is homeschooled, and you can see the closeness that creates. There’s a strong bond between him and his family—easy conversation, quiet confidence, mutual respect. He has a lot of interests: guitar, judo, Boy Scouts. He came prepared with a few very specific photo needs, including a clean headshot with no filters or cropping and a full-body image for official use. Knowing those things ahead of time makes everything flow so much better. We built them naturally into the session instead of stopping and starting, which keeps things relaxed—especially for senior boys. He brought his guitar, which felt like an extension of who he is, and we made sure it was part of the story.

He wore three outfits: jeans with his West-MEC shirt, a brown shirt, and his Boy Scout uniform top. We actually photographed his session on the very day Boy Scouts officially started, which felt fitting. Elijah has earned his Eagle Scout—something that takes years of dedication, effort, and perseverance. That’s not a small thing. I also love incorporating parents into senior sessions when it feels right. These aren’t family photos; they’re moments between a senior and their parents. Those photos don’t happen often, especially when there are siblings, and they end up meaning more than anyone expects. And because I can’t help myself, I have to mention the rubber ducky. A little birdie told me he loves them, so of course one had to make an appearance—brief, playful, and very him.

Some sessions stay with you. My favorite images from Elijah’s shoot are one of him holding his guitar, looking back with the Arizona sunrise behind him, and another of him sitting on a stool with his guitar in front of the bridge at Skyline Park. They feel honest. Calm. Confident. I wish Elijah nothing but the best in his future endeavors. Congratulations Elijah!!!

For moms of senior boys—especially here in the West Valley—I know how fast this season moves, even when life is busy and messy and full. If your son is graduating in 2026 and you’re starting to think about senior photos, I’d love for you to reach out (kimvanosphotography@gmail.com). We’ll keep it simple, meaningful, and true to who he is. Check out more senior photos from Kim VanOs Photography here!
