First let me say – CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Now onto preparing for senior photos. They should feel exciting, not overwhelming. Whether you’re the graduate stepping in front of the camera or the parent helping plan the details, a little preparation goes a long way toward a relaxed, meaningful session.
When should we book a senior session in Phoenix?
Phoenix offers incredible senior photo opportunities thanks to its year-round sunshine and minimal rain. October through April are ideal months because the temperatures cool, but the best time depends on your location choice. For seasonal color, October brings sunflowers in Buckeye, while spring offers blooms at locations like Manatee Ranch in Glendale. If you’re drawn to a classic desert look, fall and winter are best, since spring tends to bring out snakes. Downtown sessions depend on event schedules. I recommend booking at least one month in advance to allow time for permits, outfit planning, and location coordination. If schedules shift, please reach out as soon as possible so we can adjust.
What should I wear for senior photos?
I recommend three outfits to give your gallery variety and depth. Instead of focusing on all trends, choose looks that reflect who you are right now. I suggest picking 3 outfits one from each of these categories:
- Dressy or formal
- Sports-related
- College-related
- Edgy or bold
- Vintage
- Everyday casual
- Trendy
- Western-inspired
- Heirloom pieces
Choosing three outfits from different categories creates a well-rounded gallery that feels personal and timeless. A few tips to keep in mind: bright reds can cast color onto skin, neons don’t photograph well, and logos tend to distract from the subject — and the subject should always be you.
For parents: Help with coordination and fit, but try to let your senior lead. Confidence shows up beautifully on camera.
How do I choose outfits that feel like me?
Start in your own closet. These are clothes you already feel comfortable in and confident wearing. If you need to add a piece or two, shopping or thrifting can help round things out — but it doesn’t need to be complicated. Once outfits are chosen, then move onto meaningful props, accessories and shoes.
How do we choose a location?
The greater Phoenix area offers endless options, which can feel overwhelming. I simplify the process by narrowing locations into categories:
- downtown/urban
- seasonal
- desert
- greenery
- western
- school-related
- or a meaningful personal spot.
Most seniors choose outdoor locations, but studio sessions are also available. Once you decide on a category from there, if needed I use mood boards to visually walk you through the options from the category you choose so the location matches your personality and style.
Should I bring anything with me?
Yes — bring items that matter to you. Instruments, sports gear, college apparel, pets, or heirloom pieces like a grandparent’s necklace all help tell your story. On another note: I also recommend bringing lip balm and a brush for quick touch-ups.
Do you offer hair and makeup?
I work with a wonderful stylist I’m happy to refer. Professional hair and makeup can elevate the look, but the goal is still to feel like you. I recommend wearing your hair and makeup the way you normally do — just slightly more polished.
What if my senior feels awkward in front of the camera?
This is completely normal. Most people feel unsure at the start. I guide posing gently, starting with how your senior naturally stands and moves, then making small adjustments. Movement helps, and having a trusted parent or friend nearby often eases nerves quickly.
How long does a graduate session last?
Senior sessions typically last 1–2 hours, depending on lighting, outfit changes, locations, props, and who joins us. Every session is tailored to the senior.
Can parents or friends attend the session?
Absolutely — just keep it simple. Parents are always welcome, and one close friend can be great support. Large groups tend to distract from the experience. Many parents plan a dinner or celebration afterward with their senior to really lean into this time with their grad.
What happens after the session?
You have two options:
- I pick the best of the best using my creative eye for your gallery and you will have your gallery sent to you within 14 days.
- You, the senior and your family picks the photos you want in your gallery. (If you choose to pick your images, you’ll have 7 days to select favorites. Once selections are received, editing takes up to 14 days.)
Galleries are delivered via ShootProof, where you can order professional prints or download digitals.
How should we plan for prints, announcements, and yearbooks?
If your school has yearbook requirements or you know you’ll need specific print sizes, let me know ahead of time so we can plan accordingly. I naturally capture a variety of orientations, but advance notice ensures nothing is missed — especially for announcements and social media.
What’s the biggest mistake families make?
The biggest missed opportunity is not slowing down to enjoy this season together. Senior year moves fast. Taking time to connect and celebrate your senior makes the experience — and the photos — even more meaningful.
From a planning standpoint, overthinking outfits creates unnecessary stress. For me, the biggest challenge is not knowing concerns or requests ahead of time. Communication helps everything flow more smoothly.
How can we make the most of our senior session?
Take a breath and be present. Senior year is full, for both students and parents. This session is a chance to pause, connect, and preserve a moment in time — not just through photos, but through the experience itself.
