Senior Year Timeline: A Month-by-Month Guide for Parents

What I Learned During My Daughter’s Senior Year

As both a senior photographer and a mom sending my oldest to ASU this fall, I can tell you one thing for sure…

Senior year flies by.

One minute you’re scheduling senior photos and shopping for homecoming dresses. The next, you’re buying dorm room essentials and wondering how there is suddenly a giant senior portrait hanging in your living room.

If your family is starting senior year, here’s what I learned along the way.

August: Schedule Senior Photos & Get Organized

August is when it all starts to feel real.

If you haven’t scheduled senior photos yet, now is the time. Fall dates fill quickly, and you’ll want those images for announcements, yearbooks, and all the memories ahead.

One thing that helped us tremendously was creating a shared family calendar. Every Sunday we’d sit down, add school events, appointments, deadlines, and family plans. It kept us organized during one very busy year.

And one more thing…start taking photos with your senior, not just of them. Yes, I am talking to you momma!

September: Senior Activities Begin

Senior activities start filling the calendar fast.

Homecoming, sports, college visits, and deadlines all seem to arrive at once.

My biggest advice?

✔ Have your senior meet with their school counselor early.

✔ Start talking about college applications.

✔ Keep taking everyday photos.

Those ordinary moments become the ones you’ll treasure most.

October: College Applications & Scholarships

College applications suddenly become real.

Scholarships, essays, FAFSA, deadlines…it can feel overwhelming.

My best advice is to create one master checklist and add every deadline to your calendar as soon as you know it. (including the scholarship deadlines)

Future-you will be thankful.

November: Celebrate the “Lasts”

November was when it finally hit me.

There were suddenly more “lasts” than “firsts.”

Last homecoming.

Last Girl Scout year.

Last football game.

Take the pictures. They will say they hate it but they will want them later.

All of them.

December: Enjoy the Holiday Traditions

The holidays feel different during senior year.

You realize next year your traditions may look a little different.

Bake the cookies.

Watch the movies.

Take the family photo.

These are the moments you’ll want to remember.

January: The Final Semester Begins

The final semester begins.

College acceptances start arriving, plans become real, and conversations shift from “Where should I apply?” to “How are we paying for this?”

I’ll be honest…

This is also when the emotions started sneaking up on me.

Apparently that’s part of the process. (at least that’s what I am told)

February: Celebrate Every Win

Celebrate every win.

Acceptance letters.

Scholarships.

Even knowing your kid is surviving senioritis.

These milestones deserve to be celebrated. (remember to breathe)

March: Graduation Is Closer Than You Think

Spring break arrives, and suddenly graduation feels close.

Prom planning begins.

Cap and gown photos happen.

Time speeds up.

Spend the extra time together—even if it’s just movie nights at home.

April: Capture Every Moment

April is full of memories.

Prom.

Awards.

Senior nights.

Final performances.

Don’t worry about taking perfect photos.

Just document the story.

May: Graduation Day Is Here

And just like that…

Graduation arrives.

The cap and gown.

The celebrations.

The tears.

You’ll feel incredibly proud and a little heartbroken—all at the same time.

One Final Piece of Advice From a Mom

A few weeks ago, our family traveled back to Grand Rapids, where I lived for ten years, met my husband, and welcomed our daughter into the world.

One day, I watched Dixie laughing on the shore of Lake Michigan and found myself wishing I could freeze time.

That’s when I realized something.

The photos I treasure most aren’t the perfect ones.

They’re the ones we’re in together.

So if I can leave you with one piece of advice, it’s this:

Don’t just spend senior year documenting your child’s journey.

Be part of it.

Because senior year really does go faster than you think.

Planning Senior Photos for the Class of 2027?

Now is the perfect time to start planning their senior photo experience. I’d love to help you celebrate this incredible season before it flies by.
