Family Sunflower Session at Sweet Flower Home
There’s something magical about watching a new family find their rhythm, especially in a field of sunflowers that are still showing off in late October. That’s exactly what happened with Melissa, Misha, and their sweet eight-month-old, Jordan — a little trio that instantly made my heart smile the second they stepped into the rows of sunflowers.
I actually met them at my booth at the Waddell Get Local Farmers Market. Melissa knew she wanted professional photos but didn’t know where to go, and honestly, that makes the moment even sweeter — a chance connection that turned into one of my favorite fall mornings.
We shot on Halloween morning, first thing, while the sky was still painted in that purple Arizona dawn that feels too pretty to be real. It was cool — actually cool — which in Phoenix is basically a love letter from the universe. LOL, yes even in October! Sweet Flower Home always staggers their sunflower planting, so even in the last week of the season, the back rows were popping like they were showing off just for us.
But let’s be real: the moment they arrived, my eyes went straight to Jordan.
This sweet baby… her big wide eyes could take in the entire world. She had on the tiniest little cowboy boots, a jean jacket, and a blue-and-white jumper that might as well have been custom-made for a sunflower field. Completely adorable. Completely unfair.
You could watch Misha relax as she held Jordan. The way her shoulders dropped. The way her face softened. The way she couldn’t stop laughing when they played that classic “upsey downsey” game every parent has done since the beginning of time. That was the moment she let herself be fully in it — not thinking, not worrying, not managing — just loving her baby.
And then there were the glances. The ones Melissa and Misha kept sneaking at each other while Jordan stared wide-eyed at the sunflowers. That “holy crap, we’re moms, and this is amazing” look. I love it! It took me right back to when my own daughter was eight months old — when I was so wildly in love with her that even after almost dying giving birth, I still wanted another one because she was just that cute. That’s what this session stirred up. That head-over-heels, brand-new, we-made-a-human kind of love.
I brought a little wooden crate for Jordan to sit in and a book for them to read together, and honestly? Those quiet moments are what I live for. Not the “everyone smile at the camera” stuff — sure, we get one or two of those for the grandparents — but the real photos? Those are the ones where families forget they’re being photographed and just fall into each other. That’s the gallery. That’s where the magic sits.
Walking those rows with them felt peaceful, simple, and soft — the way new parenthood sometimes feels when you catch your breath between the chaos. When you look at your baby, your partner, this little life you’re building, and you think, this is good.
More than anything, I hope when they look back at these photos’ years from now, they remember that exact feeling — the love, the hope, and the dreams they have for Jordan as the Arizona sun rose behind them.
A sunflower field couldn’t ask for a better family.
