A Custom “Tea for Two” Birthday Photoshoot | Avondale Child Photographer

There is something so special about getting to watch little ones grow—and sweet Nile holds such a special place in my heart. I’ve been photographing her since she was a smiling newborn, and this year we celebrated one of the sweetest milestones… her second birthday.

Last year, we went all out with a golden cake smash for her golden birthday. This year, her mom, Brandi, came to me wanting something just as meaningful—but completely different. Nile’s aunt had sent the most beautiful outfits from Africa, including matching dresses for both mom and daughter. Each piece told a story, and we knew right away this session needed to be centered around her—her personality, her joy, and her heritage.

Originally, we talked about incorporating a Mickey Mouse “Toodles” theme (because, of course, Nile is obsessed!), but once I saw the dresses, I knew we needed to lean into something softer and more timeless. I asked Brandi to trust me, and together we created a custom “Tea for Two” birthday photoshoot that blended childhood magic with meaningful details.

For her butterfly dress, we created a whimsical tea party filled with soft textures, butterflies, and just a touch of Disney magic. Nile wasn’t feeling her best that morning, so the session started with quiet snuggles in her mama’s arms—some of the most genuine and emotional images from the day. As she warmed up, her sweet personality came through, and we even captured some joyful smiles as she played.

The second look, a vintage-inspired cornflower blue dress, called for something more delicate and refined. We styled a soft tea party scene with roses, a petite rose tea set, and the tiniest lemon cupcakes. Nile carefully “sipped” tea and explored the setup in her own way—those little curious moments that moms always want to remember.

For the final look, we focused on heritage. Her bold African print dress, matching her mom’s, represented her family’s tribe. We kept this part of the session simple and full of movement—bubbles floating through the air, laughter, and space for Nile to just be two. It was playful, meaningful, and completely her.

One of the most special moments of the entire session was when Nile’s grandmother joined in for a few photos. Capturing three generations together—those are the images that truly last a lifetime.

This session is the perfect example of what I love most about being an Avondale child photographer—creating custom children’s photoshoots in West Phoenix that are designed around your child’s personality, your family’s story, and the moments you never want to forget.

If you’re dreaming of a birthday or milestone session that feels unique, meaningful, and completely tailored to your child, I would love to create something special for you.
