Ellie Turns Five | A Sweet West Valley Family Session

Some sessions are planned months in advance… and some come together in the sweetest, most unexpected way.

I met Ellie, Braxon, and their mom Cheylynn while they were visiting from Texas. They were only in town for a week, and mom reached out hoping for something simple—just a few photos of her daughter to capture turning five.

And honestly… those are some of my favorite kinds of sessions.

The Kind of Confidence You Can’t Fake

Ellie just turned five, and she has this quiet confidence about her that you don’t see every day. Not the loud, performative kind—but the kind that comes from being truly loved and comfortable being exactly who she is.

From the very beginning, she didn’t need much direction at all. She would pose on her own, shift naturally, and just be in front of the camera. It was one of those moments where I found myself thinking, “she’s already got it.”

And her pigtails? Absolutely adorable. Those little details always end up being the things you remember most.

A Little Bit of Real Life (and Zombies)

Of course, no session with little ones is complete without a little personality—and Braxon definitely brought that.

He was all about zombies, so instead of trying to redirect him, we leaned into it. That’s something I always tell moms—your kids don’t need to “behave” perfectly. They just need to be themselves.

At one point, Ellie made the cutest kissy face while playing along, and it was one of those perfectly imperfect moments that just works.

Later, I asked if she wanted to do cartwheels in the grass… and that’s when things really opened up. Both kids started playing, laughing, and asking me to take more photos. Those are always my favorite moments—the ones you don’t force.

A Simple Vision That Turned Into Something Special

This wasn’t meant to be a big, elaborate session. Mom had a simple vision—something inspired by a photo she loved, with tall grass and a soft, natural feel.

So I chose a quiet West Valley location here in the Phoenix area that had just that. Tall grass like you don’t always find in Arizona, soft golden light, and plenty of space for kids to just be kids.

As a Phoenix family photographer, I’m always looking for spots that give you that balance—beautiful, but also relaxed and not overcrowded. This one checked every box.

Golden Hour + Letting Kids Be Kids

We shot during golden hour (my favorite, always), and the light in those first few images was just perfection.

We started with a few posed shots to make sure mom got exactly what she wanted—and then we let go of structure.

That’s when the magic really happens.

No pressure, no expectations. Just kids playing in the grass, being a little wild, a little silly, and completely themselves.

Why These Moments Matter

There’s something really special about photographing a five-year-old.

Because she will only be five once.

The way she smiles, the way she moves, the way she confidently steps into the frame like she belongs there… it all changes so quickly.

And as a mom, those are the moments you want to hold onto.

For the Moms Reading This

If you’re worried about your kids “behaving” during photos—don’t.

I’m not looking for perfect. I’m looking for real.

If your child wants to pretend to be a zombie? We’ll go with it.
If they want to run, twirl, or do cartwheels? Even better.

The best West Valley family photos come from letting kids feel comfortable, not controlled.

A few quick tips:

  • Choose outfits your kids can move in
  • Skip big logos and keep it simple
  • Let them know it’s going to be fun (not a chore)

And trust me—I’ll take care of the rest.

Why I Love Sessions Like This

This session was extra special to me because Cheylynn is the daughter of a dear friend from high school—someone I’ve adored for years. Getting to photograph her family and her daughter at this stage of life meant more than I can even put into words.

I love photographing families, especially little ones, because of the energy they bring. It’s unpredictable, a little chaotic at times… but always real.

And that’s what makes it beautiful.

Let’s Plan Your Session

If you’ve been thinking about updating your family photos, this is your sign!

Whether you’re local or just visiting, I’d love to create something special for your family through Arizona family photography that actually feels like you.
