Downtown Phoenix Family Photos at Heritage Square | Arizona Family Photographer
Some families walk into a session and immediately make you feel like you’re part of their little world. That’s exactly how it felt with Rebecca, her husband, and their two kiddos, Caroline and Zachary, during their downtown Phoenix session at Heritage Square.
The very first thing I noticed? How perfectly coordinated they were without looking forced. Rebecca and Caroline showed up in the prettiest cranberry dresses, with Rebecca’s denim jacket giving it that extra pop of personality. The guys leaned into denim with black and gray — simple, classic, and absolutely perfect for the downtown vibe.
Rebecca came with one main goal: a really good family photo for their Christmas cards. But honestly? They gave me so much more.
The evening was buzzing with other photographers and families — Heritage Square in the fall is basically the Times Square of photo season — but it didn’t faze them at all. Their kids came in with big personalities, bigger facial expressions, and totally unfiltered kid-humor energy. I knew from the collaboration sheet I have family’s fill out that I needed a knock-knock joke in my back pocket. (Worth it.)
Caroline is eight going on twenty — smart, thoughtful, bunny-obsessed, and a chess lover. A fun side story: when they were considering adopting a bunny, they came to meet the foster bunny I had at the time. He was adopted before they made their decision, but they ended up with the perfect bunny anyway. It’s one of those sweet full-circle things I love about this job.
And then there’s Zachary — six years old with Minecraft dreams and the most genuinely helpful little spirit. At the end of the session, he asked if he could “pose” for me, and I nearly melted (seriously – a photogs dream). Caroline quickly hopped in with her own poses, and those little end-of-session moments were my favorites.
One moment that stuck with me was when Dad scooped up both kids at once as I was getting ready for a dad-and-kids photo. It was playful, messy, real. Exactly what childhood looks like before it slips through our fingers.
Rebecca told me that if she could back to giver herself one piece of parenting advice as a new mom:
“Get out there — you don’t have to go at it alone. And the schedule can take a break.”
Honestly? I think we all need that piece of advice.
There was this quiet moment on a bench after the kids had finished being silly. They settled, leaned in, and for a split second, they both looked at the camera together with the cutest smiles. Chef’s kiss!
I usually have parents touch foreheads during family photos — something about that pose helps the whole world fall away — and watching Rebecca and her husband exhale together, holding hands and breathing each other in, reminded me why I love what I do. These tiny pauses in the middle of raising kids matter more than we realize.
We had originally planned to shoot by the stairs at the Arizona Science Center, but it was packed. Without skipping a beat, Rebecca shrugged and said, “Heritage Square itself is fine!” And honestly, it was better. The kids were silly. They were sweet. They climbed, they hugged, they made faces, they made memories and we still got a few on the stairs.
They wrapped up their session heading to The Spaghetti Factory for a family dinner — turning photos into a full family night. That made my heart ridiculously happy.
If there’s one thing I hope they remember when they look at these photos years from now, it’s this: time is a thief, and it moves fast. These kids will be graduating high school before they know it. It’s messy, it’s tiring, and it’s loud in the middle of it all — but this moment right here? It’s golden. And you never get it back.
Want downtown photos that feel real, relaxed, and full of personality? Heritage Square is one of my favorite locations for fall family sessions.
