What Makes a Great Prom Photo Session?
Prom is one of those milestones that seems to sneak up on parents. One minute your child is heading to their first school dance, and the next they’re dressed to the nines, stepping into one of the biggest nights of their high school years. For many teens, prom may be the only time they dress this formally until a wedding years down the road.
One question I hear often is, “What if my teen feels awkward in front of the camera?” The truth is, most do. That’s why my job isn’t to make them pose perfectly—it’s to help them forget the camera is there. Whether they’re attending prom with friends, a boyfriend or girlfriend, or simply want individual portraits before the big event, I keep them moving, ask questions, and create opportunities for genuine interaction. The best prom photos happen when teens stop thinking about the camera and start enjoying the moment. When planning prom photos, I always recommend scheduling before the dance, ideally during the late afternoon or early evening. Choosing a location that’s on the way to prom and allowing plenty of time to get ready helps everyone enjoy the experience without feeling rushed.
I have known Brem for several years through the Waddell Get Local Farmers Market. For the past two fall seasons, I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside Brem and his mom, Kim. Through their family business, MM Ranch Services, they’ve generously allowed me to incorporate their sweet farm animals into photo sessions, creating some unforgettable memories for my clients. I first met Brem when he was only fourteen years old, and watching him grow into the young man he is today has been such a gift.
Brem is one of those people who works hard and loves hard. He’s kind, dependable, and always willing to help. Addie is a family friend who matches his sweet personality and strong work ethic perfectly. She works alongside him at the farmers markets, and the two of them have such a natural connection. While Addie selected this beautiful Goodyear field location through family friends, Brem was the one who reached out, booked the session, and handled all the planning. That says a lot about who he is.
Brem & Addie’s Prom Session in Goodyear
One of my favorite moments from their Arizona prom photography session was watching them dance together in the middle of the field. Every time Brem looked at Addie, he couldn’t stop smiling. Those are the moments that can’t be posed. They simply happen when two people enjoy being around each other. The session wasn’t without challenges. Prom was across town, which meant we needed to photograph at 4 p.m. in May—prime Arizona sunshine. Addie handled the heat, wind, and high heels in an open field like a champion. The wind was relentless, but she never complained once.
Why Prom Photos Are Worth It
Prom is absolutely a milestone worth documenting. Being young, excited for the future, dressed up, and surrounded by people you care about doesn’t happen often. These photographs become reminders of a season that passes quickly. As I photographed Brem and Addie, I couldn’t help but think about my own daughter. It feels like I was just encouraging her to attend junior high dances, and now she’s preparing to leave for college after attending her final prom this year. These years go by faster than we ever expect.
Looking Ahead to Senior Year
For many families, prom is just one of the final milestones before graduation. If your teen is entering their senior year, you can learn more about my Graduate Stories experience and what to expect from a senior session. If you’re looking for inspiration, take a look at Ivanna’s senior photos at Sahuaro Ranch and Papago Park, one of my favorite recent senior sessions. Before you know it, prom will be behind them, graduation will arrive, and these photographs will become some of the memories you treasure most.
