What to Wear for Family Photos in Arizona

The Struggle Is Real

Outfit stress is very real for moms here in the Valley of the Sun—especially in the Arizona heat. As a native Arizonan, I get it. I also totally understand the “Pinterest perfect” pressure we feel to look coordinated but still “natural.”

That’s like an oxymoron, right? Whoever came up with that must not have had kids. 😅

The good news? I’ve got you covered with easy, real-life clothing tips that will help your family look amazing in photos—without the drama or the sweat.

Start with the Weather

If we must talk about it… yes, Arizona is hot. I don’t book outdoor shoots in the summer (because I’m not a monster), but even fall and spring can feel toasty. I always say we have three seasons here: hot, really hot, and unbearable. So, keep it breathable for fall and spring think light layers and airy fabrics. I recommend cotton, linen, or flowy dresses—especially for moms. These photograph beautifully and keep you comfortable during your session.

Don’t Go Too Matchy—Coordinate Instead

Matching outfits from head to toe? Leave that to the holiday pajamas. Instead, aim to coordinate, not clone.

Try this:

  • Pick one standout piece (usually mom’s!) and build the rest of the family’s outfits around that.

  • Use a color palette instead of exact matches. A color palette means choosing 3–4 coordinating colors (like navy, cream, and rust) that work well together without everyone wearing the exact same thing.

  • Complementary colors are great:

    • Red + Green

    • Blue + Orange

    • Yellow + Purple

And don’t forget to vary textures—it adds visual interest and depth to your photos. Look at how this beautiful momma took her outfit and made it the center piece of the shoot. Then created a whole look around it by dressing her family in coordinating colors with her dress – just stunning!

Think Movement and Comfort

This might be the most important tip: wear clothes that move and feel good. Nothing ruins a shot faster than a scratchy sweater or jeans that won’t let you move. (I mean just look at this family who loves to dance – their outfits allowed them the freedom to do just that.)

Here’s a quick list of things to avoid:

  • Big logos or brand names

  • Neon colors

  • Large, bold stripes or tiny stripes/patterns

These tend to be distracting and date your photos fast.

Don’t Go Too Matchy—Coordinate Instead

  • Bring layers that can shed if it gets warm.

  • Make sure everyone’s in comfy shoes—especially if we’ll be walking or running around.

Bonus Mom Tip: Bring a backup outfit for littles. And if you’ve got a strong-willed toddler or teen, let them choose one piece of their outfit. Trust me—it helps with buy-in and boosts their confidence.

And let’s be real: those quirky outfit choices? They’re part of who they are. One day you’ll be so glad you captured it.

Bonus Tips

  • Start planning around your outfit first, then build out.
  • Keep accessories simple but meaningful.

  • Skip the stress—if you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help.
