There’s something magical about capturing kids just as they are — silly, curious, and full of life. I had the absolute joy of photographing a family downtown Phoenix recently, and let me tell you, these two kiddos brought all the personality and laughter you could hope for in a session.
Their mom, Rebecca, chose the area around the Science Center because they had already used desert and greenery locations for past photos. She wanted something fresh, urban, and lively — and Heritage Square gave us the perfect backdrop. The mix of historic architecture, colorful textures, and iconic stairs made every shot feel dynamic and fun.
From the moment we started, it was clear these kiddos were going to lead the session. They were completely themselves — silly, imaginative, and playful. I love those moments when I ask kids to lean and whisper a secret to mom or give dad a quick kiss. Those little interactions are pure gold for family photos. And then, just when we were wrapping up, the son asked me if I could take his photos. He posed confidently in all sorts of ways, and his sister jumped in right after him. I couldn’t stop smiling — these self-posed shots were epic and so full of personality! Check them out below.
I always let kids be kids. I don’t try to force smiles or fake poses; they can feel it if you’re not genuine. By asking questions from my questionnaire — like, “So what world are you working on in Minecraft right now?” — I can connect with them immediately and get real, joyful expressions. I guide them gently, but I’m always ready to follow their lead into silly, impromptu poses.
We shot during golden hour, letting the warm Phoenix sunset light bounce off the buildings and streets for that dreamy, soft glow. By the end of the session, the family had more than just a single “good photo” — they had a full gallery filled with playful, heartfelt, and candid moments that truly represent who they are.
This session reminded me, yet again, how fast time flies. These kids will be teenagers in the blink of an eye. I hope one day we can recreate these moments at this exact location, capturing new memories with the same joy and love for this family.
Some quick words of wisdom from Rebecca when I asked if she could go back and give herself advice as a new parent what it would be: Get out there, you don’t have to go at it alone (and the schedule can take a break)
