Throwback Session: Sydney’s Senior Photoshoot in Nature
As the owner of Kim VanOs Photography in Avondale, AZ, I love celebrating the unique personalities and stories of every graduate client I photograph. Sydney’s senior session is one of my all-time favorites—a perfect blend of personal style, natural beauty, and a little bit of Arizona magic.
Sydney’s Vision: Nature as the Backdrop
Sydney knew exactly what she wanted: a senior photoshoot surrounded by nature. In the Phoenix area, finding a spot with trees, water, tall grass, and wildlife is no small feat, but we found the ideal location on the east side of the Valley. The setting was everything she dreamed of, and we even spotted a coyote running through the field as we shot—one of those moments that makes each session memorable.
Styling With Heart: From “Grandma” Sweaters to Cowboy Boots
Before the shoot, I visited Sydney at home for a quick clothing consult. She loves thrifting and has a special affection for “grandma sweaters”—and she rocks them like no one else! Her style is quirky, fun, and totally her own. We also discussed how to coordinate her cap and gown with her favorite outfits to create a gallery full of variety and personality.
One of my favorite memories from her session was helping her choose shoes for her white dress. When Sydney pulled out her cowboy boots, we both knew it was the perfect combination. That look, paired with the natural backdrop, truly captured her spirit.
A Creative Twist: Album Cover Edits
As I culled her gallery, I struggled to pick favorites—every image felt special. But the shots of Sydney in the field, which I edited with a moodier, “album cover” vibe, hold a special place in my heart. While my usual style is light and airy, experimenting with this look gave the images a bold, artistic edge that fit Sydney’s personality beautifully.
