Somehow, six months arrives before you’ve had a chance to catch your breath.
That’s exactly why I love six-month milestone sessions.
They’re one of the sweetest seasons of baby’s entire first year.
As moms, we’re usually so busy keeping everyone fed, loved, and on schedule that we don’t always realize just how much our babies have changed until we look back at photos.
That’s why milestone sessions are so important.
They’re little bookmarks in your family’s story.
A way to pause life for just a moment before your baby grows into the next version of themselves.
Meet Orin
Orin came into my home studio to celebrate turning six months old.
His mom and dad wanted to capture this stage before it disappeared.
They also wanted to include his big brother, Ollie.
I absolutely loved that.
Because becoming a big brother is its own milestone, too.
Making Sure Big Brother Felt Special
One thing I always try to pay attention to is the older sibling.
When there’s a new baby in the family, it’s easy for all the attention to naturally shift toward the newest little one.
I never want an older brother or sister to feel like they’re just waiting their turn.
So before we even started photographing Orin, I spent a few minutes with Ollie.
His own time in front of the camera.
Then I gave him one very important job.
He became my official Watermelon Tester.
A Watermelon Theme That Couldn’t Have Been More Perfect
Summer and watermelon just belong together.
I wanted this set to feel playful without feeling overwhelming.
I created a backdrop using strips of dark green fabric layered together to mimic the outside of a watermelon.
Warm wood flooring helped balance all of the color, while a red-and-white picnic blanket brought everything together.
Real watermelons added just enough texture without distracting from what mattered most.
Orin.
His mom absolutely nailed the wardrobe choices.
A green-and-cream striped romper.
A sweet little “Half” onesie.
Classic denim overalls.
And finally…
Just a diaper.
Ironically, those diaper photos ended up producing some of my favorite smiles of the entire session.
Sometimes less really is more.
Discovering Watermelon for the First Time
One of my favorite parts of milestone sessions is watching babies experience something brand new.
For Orin, that was watermelon.
The look on his face when he took his first bite was priceless.
His eyes grew so wide as he tried to figure out this juicy new fruit.
Then…
He wanted more.
And more.
Before long he was happily devouring watermelon while his big brother watched with the biggest grin on his face.
Watching those two together made the entire session.
The Sweetest Brother Moment
If I had to choose one favorite image from the session, it would probably be the moment Ollie looked over with a handful of watermelon and caught Orin happily eating his watermelon cake.
Neither one of them knew they were creating a memory their parents would treasure forever.
That’s my favorite kind of photograph.
The ones that simply happen.
Flexibility Makes All the Difference
One thing parents often worry about before a milestone session is whether their baby will cooperate.
Here’s the truth.
Every baby is different.
Some smile immediately.
Some need a little extra time.
Some want snacks.
Some need cuddles.
Some simply need a nap.
Honestly?
I’d rather have you arrive forty-five minutes late with a happy baby than right on time with an exhausted one.
