If you live in the West Valley, you know that March is our “Golden Month.” The brittlebush is turning the White Tanks yellow, the air is perfectly crisp in the morning and warm by the afternoon, and the harsh summer heat is still just a distant threat.
It is arguably the best time of year for photos in Arizona, but it can be tricky to dress for. We are transitioning out of the “heavy” look of winter and into something lighter and more vibrant. Whether you are prepping for a family session or a senior grad session, here is how to master the “Spring Bloom” look.
1. Lighten the Load: Fabric Choice is Everything
In March, we trade the heavy knits for fabrics that breathe and move with the desert breeze.
-
The Textures: Think linen, lace, and light denim. A lace overlay on a dress or a linen button-down for the boys adds a high-end, professional feel to your photos without causing anyone to overheat.
-
The Movement: March often brings a light breeze. Embrace it! Flowy maxi dresses or skirts look incredible in the desert wind, creating that “ethereal” look that stiff fabrics just can’t replicate.
2. The “Spring Bloom” Palette
The desert is surprisingly colorful in March! To make sure your family stands out (and doesn’t clash with the scenery), I recommend:
-
Soft Pastels: Sage green, dusty rose, and buttercream yellow.
-
Neutral Earth Tones: Creams, tans, and light olives keep the focus on your faces.
-
A Pop of Blue: A soft chambray or light denim blue looks stunning against the yellow wildflowers popping up near Estrella and Verrado.
3. Layering for the “Arizona Shift”
Even though the afternoons are gorgeous, that 5:00 PM “Golden Hour” session can still get a little chilly as soon as the sun drops behind the mountains.
-
The Hero Piece: A denim jacket or a short sleeved button up sweat can your best friend. It’s easy to throw on over a floral dress or a polo, and it never goes out of style.
-
For the Cap and Gown Photo: If you have your cap and gown, remember that graduation gowns are essentially polyester blankets! Wear something lightweight underneath (like a sundress or a light cooling-fabric polo) so you stay comfortable until the tassels are turned.
4. Footwear for the Terrain
While we’re aiming for a “Spring” look, we are still in the desert!
-
Skip the Thin Heels: We’ll likely be walking near brush or on uneven dirt. Wedges, block heels, or stylish leather boots/sandals are much safer (and more comfortable) for navigating our beautiful West Valley trails.
Why March?
The value of a March session isn’t just the weather—it’s the timing. For my Seniors, booking now means your gallery is ready in time for graduation announcements. For my family session mommas, it’s the last chance to do an outdoor session before we have to move back inside to avoid the 100-degree days.
The stress of “what to wear” is the biggest hurdle to getting photos done—so let me handle the rest! Pick a color palette, grab a light layer, and let’s go play in the wildflowers.
