Let’s be honest—family photo day can feel like prepping for battle. You’re trying to pick outfits that don’t clash, wrangle wild toddler energy, or pry a teenager’s phone out of their hand just long enough to get a smile.
I get it. I’m a mom too—and I’ve been on both sides of the camera. That’s why I wanted to share a few things I really wish every parent knew before their session. These five reminders can make all the difference, whether you’re showing up with a wiggly toddler or a high schooler with major “cool kid” vibes.
Not Every Smile Has to Be Perfect to Be Beautiful
Let’s ditch the idea of “perfect” right now. Some of my favorite photos are the in-between moments—when your toddler is laughing uncontrollably or your preteen is mid-eye-roll but still secretly having fun. Those moments? They’re gold.
What to do instead: Let your kids be themselves. I’ll guide them gently, keep things fun, and capture the real, heartfelt stuff you’ll love forever.
Bribes Aren’t Bad – But Fun Works Better
Toddlers live for snacks. Preteens love a good game. Teens just want to not feel awkward. I build each session to meet your kids where they’re at. You don’t need to promise a pony or panic about smiles—just come ready to have fun.
Bonus tip: If you do bring a reward? Make it something they don’t get every day. (Yes, I’m looking at you, post-photo Starbucks run.)
Your Teen Doesn’t Hate This – They’re Just Nervous
I love photographing teens. Really. They’re creative, expressive, and more comfortable when you give them just a little control over the process. When I ask for their input or show them the back of the camera, their confidence goes up—and the walls come down.
Trust me: Even the grumpiest teen usually ends up saying, “That was actually kinda fun.”
Your Energy Sets the Tone
If you’re stressed, your kids will feel it. If you’re having fun, they’ll relax too. That’s why I encourage parents to breathe, trust me, and enjoy the ride. I’ve seen it all—from toddler meltdowns to preteen sass—and I always find a way to capture beautiful, genuine moments.
Tip: Let go of the pressure. Come with zero expectations, and I’ll take care of the rest.
Your Family Is Already Enough
Read that again. You don’t need the perfect outfits, Pinterest poses, or model behavior. What you do need? Just to show up and be yourselves. That’s where the real magic lives—in the snuggles, giggles, and glances that tell your family’s story.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re wrangling toddlers, parenting tweens, or trying to pin down a teenager’s schedule, I see you. Family photos can feel chaotic, but with the right mindset (and photographer 😉), they can also be fun, relaxed, and beautifully you.
