When Your Family Doubles: An In-Home Newborn Session With Twins

There are certain seasons of family life that seem to move at two completely different speeds. The days can feel long, especially when you’re feeding babies, changing diapers, and trying to keep up with an older sibling. But somehow, those same days disappear almost overnight.

That was the season John and Marilyn were in when I photographed their family at home on a warm August afternoon.

Their family had recently grown by two. Four-year-old Penelope was now a big sister to twins, Mauve and Owen, and their home was filled with all the little moments that come with having newborns.

Instead of taking everyone somewhere unfamiliar for a posed newborn session, we stayed home.

And honestly? I loved that.

As an in-home newborn photographer in the West Valley, I believe the best newborn photos happen where your family already lives. In your own space, you don’t have to pack up tiny humans, worry about perfect outfits, or rush to a studio. You just live your life, and I document it.

Why Choose an In-Home Newborn Session?

In-home newborn photography allows a family to simply be together. There isn’t as much pressure to make everyone sit perfectly or smile at the camera. We follow the babies’ needs, feed them, read books, and let big siblings be themselves.

One of my favorite moments was watching Penelope read to her mom and baby brother. It was quiet and sweet, and it captured something that a perfectly posed photograph never could: the beginning of a relationship between siblings.

There were plenty of tiny details to photograph, too. The twins’ hands intertwined. Their little fingers. Their toes. Marilyn holding one of the babies. Those details may seem small right now, but someday they will be the things everyone wants to remember.

And then there was Penelope.

She had a toy cat and explained that she needed to hold its tail because it didn’t have a hand. Four-year-old logic is pretty hard to argue with.

One of the most emotional moments for me was watching Marilyn nurse one of the twins on the couch and then kiss

Penelope on the head. There was so much happening in that one little moment—motherhood, exhaustion, tenderness, growing families, and a big sister learning her new role.

These are the moments that make an in-home newborn session in the West Valley so meaningful. You’re not just getting “cute baby pictures.” You’re preserving the real, everyday love that defines this season.

Tips for Your In-Home Newborn Photography Session

If you’re considering an in-home newborn session, my biggest piece of advice is to pay attention to your light.

You don’t need a perfect house. You don’t need a Pinterest-worthy nursery. You need a room with beautiful natural light. Plan your session around the room that gets the best light and, when possible, schedule your session during the part of the day when that room is brightest.

The goal isn’t to make your home look like a photography studio.

The goal is to photograph your family exactly where this chapter is happening.

Because the days really are long, but the years are incredibly short.

A piece of advice from my own brother says it perfectly: when things feel overwhelming, don’t worry about getting through the entire day. Just get through this hour. When that hour is over, move on to the next.

And someday, you’ll look back at these photographs and realize just how much happened in those hours.
