Some events are beautiful. Some are meaningful.
And then there are events like this—ones that stay with you long after the night is over.

The Spirit of Strength Gala 2026, hosted by the Friends of the Southwest Advocacy Center, was one of those evenings.

Held on March 6, 2026, at the stunning The Wigwam Resort (https://www.wigwamarizona.com/) in Litchfield Park, the night brought together over 200 guests for an elegant and deeply impactful evening focused on fundraising, awareness, and support for survivors in our community.

The Heart Behind the Gala

The Southwest Advocacy Center plays a critical role in supporting individuals and families affected by violence. Their work often happens behind the scenes—quietly, compassionately, and with life-changing impact.

Events like this gala bring that work into the light.

They remind us just how much effort, care, and coordination it takes to:

  • Keep people safe
  • Help them navigate unimaginable situations
  • Provide the resources needed for healing

And most importantly—they remind us that no one has to go through it alone.

An Evening Filled with Purpose

The evening itself was elegant from start to finish. Guests enjoyed a full experience with cocktail hour, dinner, auctions, and powerful programming throughout the night.

But beyond the beautiful setting and thoughtful details, what stood out most was the energy in the room—a shared understanding that everyone there was part of something bigger.

One of the most powerful moments of the night came during a personal story shared by someone who had been abused as child by a close family friend. Hearing firsthand how the center could have helped her heal had it been available to her was incredibly emotional—and a reminder of why this work matters so deeply.

Moments That Stay With You

There were so many meaningful moments throughout the evening, but a few stood out in particular:

  • Learning that the center now has a therapy dog, offering comfort in ways words sometimes can’t
  • The announcement of self-defense classes for survivors, empowering individuals with both confidence and tools for the future
  • The keynote speaker, whose words carried both weight and hope
  • Watching the room come alive during the final bids—people showing up in a big way to support the mission

And even in the midst of such a powerful evening, there were moments of joy—like a couple winning back-to-back drawings, bringing laughter into the room.

The People Behind the Mission

One of the most meaningful parts of the night for me was capturing the team behind the Southwest Advocacy Center.

These are the people doing the work every single day—the ones showing up for others in some of the hardest moments imaginable.

I always make it a priority to photograph them together. It’s something I plan for ahead of time, scouting the best location and making sure we get a strong, intentional image.

Because those faces matter.
Their work matters.

And honestly—it’s one of the moments that brings tears to my eyes every time.

Behind the Scenes of the Evening

From a photography perspective, the night came with its challenges. While the earlier lighting was beautiful, the main event space was dim, with warm, low lighting and no natural light to work with.

But in a setting like this, the approach isn’t just about technical adjustments—it’s about respect.

Capturing moments without disrupting them.
Documenting emotion without intruding on it.

And finding that balance is what makes events like this both challenging and incredibly meaningful to photograph.

A Community Showing Up

What stood out just as much as the program itself was the community support in the room.

From local leaders to generous sponsors—including a Toyota dealership known for consistently showing up in a big way—there was a clear sense that this cause matters.

Because the truth is, you don’t always see this work happening day to day.
You don’t always realize the impact.

But when you witness it like this—when you hear the stories, see the faces, and feel the energy—it changes you.

A Venue That Matches the Moment

Hosting the event at The Wigwam Resort added another layer to the evening. The space is absolutely beautiful, and having worked there years ago, I can personally say their standard of service has always been incredibly high. Not only did they host the event the even donated an item up for auction.

It’s the kind of venue that elevates an event while still allowing the mission to remain the focus.

Why This Work Matters

This event hit especially close to home for me.

Years ago, I taught women’s and children’s self-defense, so I’ve seen firsthand the emotional impact that situations like these can have. I’ve also seen the strength it takes to move forward.

That’s why nights like this matter.

They bring awareness.
They create support.
And they remind survivors that they are not alone.

Vendors & Supporters

A special acknowledgment to the sponsors and supporters who helped make this evening possible, including:

  • Local community leaders
  • Generous donors and auction participants
  • Toyota dealership supporters
  • Mike who donated his time to MC the event.
  • Noah who was an incredible auctioneer/host who also donated hit time and talent to the event for another year.
  • Aleena who played the guitar at the cocktail hour.
