Peytin’s Senior Photos with Horses in Surprise, AZ | Kim VanOs Photography

There’s something really special about senior sessions that feel completely personal – and Peytin’s session was exactly that.

Peytin is a senior at Agua Fria High School, and she’s the kind of girl who impresses you the moment you meet her. (I might be a bit basis because I’ve known since she was in kinder). She’s incredible mature for her age, driven, and focused – but also has the biggest heart, especially when it comes to animals. Between wrestling, Girl Scouts, school clubs, volunteering to help care for a horse, and even managing the schools football tema, she somehow balances it all with so much grace.

And the best part? This wasn’t even supposed to be her official senior session.

When an Unplanned Session Turns into Magic

What started as something super casual turned into one of my favorite sessions to date. Peytin showed up completely open, willing to trust me and go along with whatever creative direction I had – and that kind of trust always leads to magic.

We kept things simple and meaningful by photographing at the place she loves most; the field where the horses are boarded in Surprise. It’s where she spends some of her limited free time, helping to care for the animals.

And honestly? You can see that she feels right at home in every single image.

The Heart Behind the Location

This location wasn’t about trendy backdrops or popular photo spots – it was about connection.  Being surrounded by something so meaningful to her instantly put Peytin at ease, and that comfort translated into the most genuine, natural images.

Sessions like this are a reminder that the best locations aren’t alays the most well-known – they’re the ones that tell your story.

Golden Light + A Little Bit of Creativity

We were definitely working against the clock (and the schedule of the horse owner), we ended up shooting later than I normally would have preferred. The sun was higher than ideal, but instead of fighting it, I leaned into it – using trees to filter the light and create a softer, more dimensional look.

The Sweetest Moment with Roadie

One of the most unforgettable parts of this session was Peytin’s connection with the horse she loves, Roadie.

At one point, I had Peytin sitting on the ground next to her, giving simple directions – look left, look foward – and every single time, Roadie followed along like she was part of the shoot. But the moment that completely melted me? When I asked Peytin to look at Roadie…she turned and looked right back at her.

Not because she was traied to – but because she chose to.

That connection is soemthing you just can’t pose or fake. It’s real, and it’s what made this gallery so incredibly special.

Real Moments You Can’t Plan

Of course, no session is complete without a little chaos—and in this case, it came in the form of the owner’s dog, who decided he absolutely needed to be part of the shoot. He ran up mid-session and started giving Peytin kisses while she was sitting down, which turned into one of those perfectly imperfect, joy-filled moments complete with a smiling Peytin getting a smooth by the pooch.

Those are always the ones clients end up loving the most.

Keeping It Simple + Authentic

Because this wasn’t meant to be her full session, Peytin wore just one outfit—something comfortable and true to her style. I even brought along a little bit of baby’s breath from a previous shoot because I knew she loved it, and those small, thoughtful details made everything feel even more “her.”

Her look was completely natural, which fit the entire vibe of the session perfectly.

Why I Love Senior Photography

Sessions like this are exactly why I love being a Phoenix senior photographer at Kim VanOs Photography.

Seniors are right on the edge of something incredible. You can see the excitement, the growth, and the future ahead of them. And when you meet someone like Peytin—who is grounded, kind, and clearly supported by a strong, loving family—you just know she’s going to do amazing things.

Advice for Future Seniors

If you’re planning your senior session, here’s my biggest piece of advice:

Choose a location that means something to you.

It doesn’t have to be popular or trendy. In fact, the more personal, the better. Whether it’s a family property, a place you spend your time, or somewhere tied to your passions—that’s what makes your photos stand out.

In Arizona, the best time for sessions like this is typically fall through early spring when the weather is more manageable. And when it comes to outfits? Keep it simple and comfortable—confidence always photographs best.
