7 Real-Life Tips for Taking Your Own Family Photos (So Mom’s Not Always Behind the Camera)

You deserve to be in the family photos—not just the one adjusting everyone’s collars and running behind the scenes. Whether you’re a photographer taking your own family pics or just trying to snap a memory without hiring someone every time, these tips will help you capture real, connected, beautiful moments with the people you love—with you in them.

Keep it Simple

Tip #1: Keep it simple.

Don’t overthink outfits or elaborate setups. Coordinating colors? Yes. Matching Christmas pajamas with sequins and suspenders for the dog? Maybe not. Focus on comfort and connection—those photos always win.

Tip #2: Use a tripod and pull it back.

This one’s key. Set your tripod far enough back to fit everyone comfortably, with a little room to move. You can always crop later. If you’re too close, someone’s head is getting chopped off or you’re stuck in an awkward huddle that can’t be fixed.

Tip #3: Master the self-timer (or a remote).

Most cameras and phones have a timer feature—use it! Set it for at least 10 seconds so you have time to run into position without tripping over a toy. Even better? Use a Bluetooth remote you can hide in your hand. Total game-changer.

Tip #4: Use burst mode.

Someone will blink. Someone will scratch their nose or sneeze or look wildly in the wrong direction. Burst mode (aka continuous shooting) gives you a better chance at catching that one frame where everyone looks like they actually like each other.

Tip #5: Time it right—sunrise or sunset.

Light makes or breaks your photo, let me say it again it’s all about the light. Shoot during golden hour—either just after sunrise or just before sunset—and keep the sun behind you for that soft, glowy light. If you’re shooting in full sun? Look for open shade or try filtered window light indoors.

Tip #6: Choose a private, low-stress location.

Your backyard, a quiet park corner, or even a cozy spot in the house with good light—privacy helps everyone relax. No one wants to pose while strangers walk by or yell “you missed one!” from the sidewalk.

Tip #7: Make it fun (or at least not miserable).

Play music. Let the kids bring a toy. Bribe them with ice cream—no judgment here. The more relaxed and silly you make it, the better the smiles. And yes, some of the best photos come after the posed ones, when everyone lets their guard down.

Bonus Tips You Didn’t Know You Needed:

    • Don’t worry about perfection. Slightly crooked horizon? Whatever. The moment matters more.

    • Laugh at the chaos. Someone will fall, fart, or throw a fit. That’s called family history, friend.

Final Thoughts:

The goal isn’t to look like you belong in a magazine—it’s to show you were there. Laughing, hugging, loving, living. Get in the frame. Take the shot. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be everything.
